'AUNT SALLIE' DIES IN LOGAN
Prominent Figure, 92, Succumbs at Home
LOGAN, July 28 (Special). --
Arrangements were made today for the burial of Mrs Sallie Garrett, 92, one of Logan county's best known residents. "Aunt Sallie," as she was known throughout the countryside, died Sunday at her home.
She was the widow of Rev W.D. (Uncle Dyke) Garrett, who died three years ago at the age of 96.
When they celebrated their 71st wedding anniversary on Feb. 19, 1938., he said: "If I married 50 times, I'd marry Sallie every time."
"Uncle Dyke," a pioneer mountain preacher, was a Confederate veteran of the war between the states. He fought with Captain John Butcher's "Logan Wildcates."
The Garretts lived at their home at Curry on the Garrett fork of Big creek, near Chapmanville, for 62 years, and "Aunt Sallie" remained there after her husband's death. The lived in a log cabin until 30 years ago, when a new farmhouse was built.
Mrs. Garrett, a native Logan countian, was a daughter of the late William and Mary Ann Butcher Smith.
"Aunt Sallie," the mother of nine children, was a young school teacher when she married "Uncle Dyke." She taught her husband how to read the Bible, because at that time he could not read or write. Industrious by nature, she was seamstress for her whole family and made her first dress when she was 13 years old.
Her husband was a mountain preacher for 65 years and was noted for converting "Devil Anse" Hatfield of Hatfield-McCoy feud fame.
Mrs. Garrett remained mentally alrert until her death. She sewed and did light housework until about four years ago. In recent years she had a daughter read to her.

Hatfield Family on porch-
Standing on the porch of the Hatfield home-place at Sarah Ann, WV,
Louvicey “Levicy” Chafin Hatfield (center) poses next to her husband, William Anderson “Devil Anse” Hatfield (1839-1921). Amongst family members is circuit-riding preacher
Uncle Dyke Garrett (with white beard). Uncle Dyke stands directly behind Levicy and Devil Anse.

Ossie Browning (granddaughter),
Uncle Dyke Garrett (back), and
Rossie Browning (left)
Dyke happened to be a longtime friend, hunting buddy, and spiritual mentor to the feud patriarch. It was Uncle Dyke who eventually led Devil Anse to the Lord, and baptized the feudist on Sept. 23, 1911 in the waters of Island Creek. This image may have been taken early on the day of the baptism.
Hatfield descendant, Wendy Griffith - a reporter with CBN News, co-anchor of The 700 Club, and the Anchor of Christian World News - once reported, "Devil Anse spent the last 10 years of his life in peace, knowing that he was forgiven, his sins washed away in the cool mountain stream.”

I'm a relative to the Hatfield family. Borned in Cow Creek, WVA near Davey... got relocated over 55 years ago to the northeast. We went to visit the old stomping grounds years ago and some of my kin brought us up into the holler and showed us an old cemetery that had a few headstones bearing the names of some of the Hatfield clan... that's when I discovered we were related to them. Pretty interesting.

Does anyone know what started the feud between the two men?
Reply28w
Brian L. Hatfield
Marilyn Cota : reputedly, about the ownership of a pig.
Reply28w
Kimberly McCoy-Kropp
Marilyn Cota history has made us all believe it was over a "pig". I'm a McCoy descendant, yes a pig was involved, but it was a McCoy who betrayed the family over ownership of the pig. The term oil between the 2 men actually started when Devil Anse deserted his infantry during the war. Him and Randall both served as conf. soldiers. This was not punishable as today.Reply28w

Marilyn Cota my family is related to the McCoy's as well. We're probably related. My family line is through Moses McCoy. Brother to William.
