'AUNT SALLIE' DIES IN LOGAN
Prominent Figure, 92, Succumbs at Home
LOGAN, July 28 (Special). --
Arrangements were made today for the burial of Mrs Sallie Garrett, 92, one of Logan county's best known residents. "Aunt Sallie," as she was known throughout the countryside, died Sunday at her home.
She was the widow of Rev W.D. (Uncle Dyke) Garrett, who died three years ago at the age of 96.
When they celebrated their 71st wedding anniversary on Feb. 19, 1938., he said: "If I married 50 times, I'd marry Sallie every time."
"Uncle Dyke," a pioneer mountain preacher, was a Confederate veteran of the war between the states. He fought with Captain John Butcher's "Logan Wildcates."
The Garretts lived at their home at Curry on the Garrett fork of Big creek, near Chapmanville, for 62 years, and "Aunt Sallie" remained there after her husband's death. The lived in a log cabin until 30 years ago, when a new farmhouse was built.
Mrs. Garrett, a native Logan countian, was a daughter of the late William and Mary Ann Butcher Smith.
"Aunt Sallie," the mother of nine children, was a young school teacher when she married "Uncle Dyke." She taught her husband how to read the Bible, because at that time he could not read or write. Industrious by nature, she was seamstress for her whole family and made her first dress when she was 13 years old.
Her husband was a mountain preacher for 65 years and was noted for converting "Devil Anse" Hatfield of Hatfield-McCoy feud fame.
Mrs. Garrett remained mentally alrert until her death. She sewed and did light housework until about four years ago. In recent years she had a daughter read to her.
