Mary Erway Welfling Founded in 1867, the National Grange is the nation’s oldest general farm and rural public interest organization. Its history is one of progress and achievements for farmers and rural communities across the U.S.. Much of the National Grange’s history has been groundbreaking: it was the first nationwide farm organization to give women full voice and vote, more than a half-century before the adoption of Universal Suffrage in the U.S. In 1870, the National Grange became the first national farm organization to attempt to organize African American farmers following the Civil War. A system of cooperative business organization was introduced by the National Grange early in its history, developing into successful national and regional farm cooperatives. In 1876, the constitutionality of Granger Laws was affirmed by the U.S. Supreme Court. Beginning in 1916 through 1941, the National Grange secured passage of federal legislation to assist struggling farmers by strengthening their property rights and their bargaining position. The National Grange has continued to support farm legislation, as well as multilateral trade negotiations and food aid programs to open foreign markets to U.S. farmers. Its representatives were present to advise the U.S. delegation at the founding of the United Nations in 1945. It brought European farm teenagers to live with Grange families following World War II, to learn about modern agriculture practices and the advantages of democracy. It has participated in agricultural development programs for the U.S. Peace Cops. The organization was also instrumental in organizing rural electric cooperatives, telephone cooperatives, water service cooperatives, public utility districts, volunteer fire departments, and state police programs across the U.S. All these measures began with support at a local level. Today, the grange maintains that voice. In Pennsylvania, it serves its members with a credit union in Harrisburg and provides health insurance to groups such as farmers. At one time, farmers could only insure their machinery through the grange. About James and Sylvia Bashline L. James (Jim) Bashline, son of J. Stanley and Mildred S. Bashline, was born in Tioga, PA on November 18, 1931. He was educated at Pennsylvania State University and Albright Art School, after which he entered the field of journalism. He became a prolific and widely acclaimed outdoor writer and photographer, contributing regular columns as well as free-lance pieces to a variety of publications, including Field and Stream, The Philadelphia Inquirer, and Pennsylvania Game News. He also authored a number of books that provided practical and professional advice for outdoor activities. These books include The Allegheny Angler (1963), The Eastern Trail (1972), Night Fishing for Trout (1972), America’s Great Outdoors (co-editor, 1976), Atlantic Salmon Fishing (1985), The Trout and Salmon Fisherman’s Bible (1991), and The Fly Fisherman’s Bible (1993). Bashline used his writing to advocate for conservation efforts. He was a member of The Ruffed Grouse Society, the National Rifle Association, Trout Unlimited, and the Federation of Flyfishers. His other activities often contributed to his written publications, such as his work as a TV presenter, outdoor photographer, artist, and cook. Sylvia Bashline was born on August 13, 1933, in Port Allegheny, PA. She was the daughter of Robert T. and Florence S. Grabe, and married Jim in August, 1952, after which her career closely mirrored that of her husband. The couple travelled extensively around the United States and Canada in order to gain first-hand experiences and practical knowledge that would enable them to publish so widely on outdoor activities. Sylvia contributed cookery columns and articles to many of the same publications as her husband, including Field and Stream and Pennsylvania Angler. Her published cookbooks include The Bounty of the Earth Cookbook (1979), Cleaning and Cooking Fish (1982), Sylvia Bashline’s Savory Game Cookbook (1983), The New Cleaning and Cooking Fish (1999), Fixin’ Fish: the Complete Guide to Cleaning and Cooking Freshwater Fish (2000), and The Fish and Game Cookbook (2000). Both Jim and Sylvia held editorial positions at Field and Stream and directorial positions in OWAA (Outdoor Writers Association of America) and POWA (Pennsylvania Outdoor Writers Association). About the James and Sylvia Bashline Papers The James and Sylvia Bashline collection consists primarily of the published magazine and newspaper articles of Jim and Sylvia Bashline, between 1958 and 1995. The collection also contains a series of manuscripts of Jim Bashline’s book Atlantic Salmon Fishing, as well as various agreements between the Bashlines and their publishers. A small number of Jim’s drawn illustrations - primarily of flies and fish - are included, as well as hundreds of slides, negatives, color transparencies, and proof sheets. These depict the Bashline’s travels, outdoor activities, and cooking recipes, and are mostly arranged by genre. Many of these photographs were used in their publications, particularly in their regular Field and Stream columns. L. James Bashline Well-Known Local Magazine Writer
L. James Bashline, 63, of R.D. 1 Box 45, Spruce Creek, died Tuesday, June 6,1995 of a heart attack.
He was born Nov. 18,1931 in Tioga, PA, the son of the late J. Stanley and Mildred S. Bashline. On Aug. 3,1952, he was married to Sylvia Grabe Bashline, who survives.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by two daughters:
Tina Bashline, Ardmore, PA;
Zoa Kile, Landisville, PA;
four grandchildren and
a sister: Norma Duvall.
Mr. Bashline was an accomplished bird hunter and fly fisherman. He was an award winning outdoor writer, photographer, artist and wood carver. Bashline has written columns for Field & Stream, Fly Fisherman, North American Fisherman, Game Journal, Pennsylvania Game News, SportShooting and Fishing World. He's also written outdoor columns for the Philadelphia Inquirer, Pittsburgh Post Gazette and the Centre Daily Times. His freelance material has been published in more than 100 magazines.
He's the author of Night Fishing For Trout, Atlantic Salmon Fishing, Allegheny Angler, Trout and Salmon Bible and the Fly Fisherman's Bible.
Bashline has contributed to more than a dozen anthologies and co-edited the much-heralded book, America's Great Outdoors. He was the founding editor of the Ftyfisher, the quarterly magazine published by the Federation of Fly Fishers.
He was a life member of the Outdoor Writer's Association of America and the Pennsylvania Outdoor Writer's Association.
He grew up in Coudersport and graduated from Coudersport High School. He attended Penn State DuBois Campus and Albright Art School in Buffalo, NY. As a surveyor for the U.S. Corp of Engineers, he helped map the Alaskan Peninsula during the Korean War.
A celebration of his life will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, June 11, 1995 at the Spruce Creek Rod and Gun Club, located one-half way between Seven Stars and Graysville off of Route 45.
Memorial contributions may be made in his name to a charity of choice. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Bruce E. Cox Funeral Home, Warriors Mark.
