OBITUARIES
L. James Bashline Well-Known Local Magazine Writer
L. James Bashline, 63, of R.D. 1 Box 45, Spruce Creek, died Tuesday, June 6,1995 of a heart attack.
He was born Nov. 18,1931 in Tioga, PA, the son of the late J. Stanley and Mildred S. Bashline. On Aug. 3,1952, he was married to Sylvia Grabe Bashline, who survives.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by two daughters:
Tina Bashline, Ardmore, PA;
Zoa Kile, Landisville, PA;
four grandchildren and
a sister: Norma Duvall.
Mr. Bashline was an accomplished bird hunter and fly fisherman. He was an award winning outdoor writer, photographer, artist and wood carver. Bashline has written columns for Field & Stream, Fly Fisherman, North American Fisherman, Game Journal, Pennsylvania Game News, SportShooting and Fishing World. He's also written outdoor columns for the Philadelphia Inquirer, Pittsburgh Post Gazette and the Centre Daily Times. His freelance material has been published in more than 100 magazines.
He's the author of Night Fishing For Trout, Atlantic Salmon Fishing, Allegheny Angler, Trout and Salmon Bible and the Fly Fisherman's Bible.
Bashline has contributed to more than a dozen anthologies and co-edited the much-heralded book, America's Great Outdoors. He was the founding editor of the Ftyfisher, the quarterly magazine published by the Federation of Fly Fishers.
He was a life member of the Outdoor Writer's Association of America and the Pennsylvania Outdoor Writer's Association.
He grew up in Coudersport and graduated from Coudersport High School. He attended Penn State DuBois Campus and Albright Art School in Buffalo, NY. As a surveyor for the U.S. Corp of Engineers, he helped map the Alaskan Peninsula during the Korean War.
A celebration of his life will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, June 11, 1995 at the Spruce Creek Rod and Gun Club, located one-half way between Seven Stars and Graysville off of Route 45.
Memorial contributions may be made in his name to a charity of choice. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Bruce E. Cox Funeral Home, Warriors Mark.
