Rice, former resident of this place, will be saddened to learn of his death which occurred at the Sanatorium in San Dimas, California, Sunday, February 14, 1943, after a long illness from complications and infirmities incident to his advanced age. Mr. Rice was born at Coryvllle, PA, April 15, 1856 on the old Rice homestead. His parents being William Rice and wife, Betsy, (Reed) Rice. To them ten children were born, all of the others having preceded Miles in death. He was an honest and industrious citizen and spent nearly his entire lifetime in this section until going to California about twelve years ago to reside. He was married to Miss Lottie Weimer, daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. George Weimer, early pioeers of Sartwell Creek. She passed away more than a score of years ago. Surviving are several local nephews and nieces and a number near his California home including Mrs. Frank Brougham, the former Miss Martha Grigsby, who cared for him during his declining years. 	20181227 Martinsburg, pasted from Source Notes: "History of the Counties of McKean...", p. 1250: George Weimer, farmer, P.O. Williston, son of George and Margaret (Lehman) Weimer, was born in Alsace, France (now Germany), November 27, 1816. In 1830 he came to America with his parents, who located at Roulette, Potter County, where they engaged in farming and spent the rest of their lives; their children were George and Eve. His father's second wife was Eve Wiederich, and their children were - Michael, - Barbara, - Mrs. Margaret Manning, - Mrs. Sally Jackson, - William S., - Frederick, - John and - Mrs. Dorcas Marsh. The subject of these lines made his home with his parents until nineteen years of age, when he began to work for farmers, and in 1836 bought a tract of wild land on which he located in 1842. This he cleared and improved, and now has one of the best farms in Pleasant Valley township. He was married in 1842, to Laura, daughter of Burrel Lyman. Their children are - Sarah (Mrs. Rosoe Stearns), - Otis, - Willis, - Ella (Mrs. Dr. Stearns, of Port Allegany), - Mary (Mrs. F. Robinson, of Liberty township, McKean county), - Nellie (Mrs. Amos Palmer, also of Liberty township), - Nettie (Mrs. Lewis Yentzer, of Roulette), - Lottie (Mrs. Miles Rice, also of Roulette), and - Roscoe. Mrs. Weimer died in 1884. In politics, Mr. Weimer is a Democrat. In 1836, he bought corn at $3 per bushel, which was brought on pack horses 80 miles from Jersey Shore, and paid for it in cutting wood at $0.75 per day.

History of Counties of McKean, Elk and Forest, Pennsylvania. Chicago, J.H. Beers & Co., 1890.
"History of the Counties of McKean...", p. 1250:
George Weimer, farmer, P.O. Williston, son of George and Margaret (Lehman) Weimer, was born in Alsace, France (now Germany), November 27, 1816.
In 1830 he came to America with his parents, who located at Roulette, Potter County, where they engaged in farming and spent the rest of their lives;
their children were George and Eve.
His father's second wife was Eve Wiederich, and their children were

- Barbara,
- Mrs. Margaret Manning,
- Mrs. Sally Jackson,
- William S.,
- Frederick,
- John and - Mrs. Dorcas Marsh.
The subject of these lines made his home with his parents until nineteen years of age, when he began to work for farmers, and in 1836 bought a tract of wild land on which he located in 1842. This he cleared and improved, and now has one of the best farms in Pleasant Valley township.
He was married in 1842, to Laura, daughter of Burrel Lyman.
Their children are

Miles Rice Dies In California

Native of Coryrille Succumbed Feb. 14

Port Allegany Reporter - -Argus-
Friends of Miles T. Rice, former resident of this place, will be saddened to learn of his death which occurred at the Sanatorium in San Dimas, California, Sunday, February 14, 1943, after a long illness from complications and infirmities incident to his advanced age.
Mr. Rice was born at Coryvllle, PA, April 15, 1856 on the old Rice homestead. His parents being William Rice and wife, Betsy, (Reed) Rice. To them ten children were born, all of the others having preceded Miles in death.
He was an honest and industrious citizen and spent nearly his entire lifetime in this section until going to California about twelve years ago to reside.
He was married to Miss Lottie Weimer, daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. George Weimer, early pioeers of Sartwell Creek. She passed away more than a score of years ago.
Surviving are several local nephews and nieces and a number near his California home including Mrs. Frank Brougham, the former Miss Martha Grigsby, who cared for him during his declining years.

I believe the Vernis/ce Reed shown would be the Vernice Reed who married Herbert Wayne Crosby in 1912. She was the daughter of Melvin Reed, by his first wife Edith (Weiderick) who died in 1893. He married Alice Maltby in Aug 1894. She would be the Alice Reed (Mrs Melvin) in the picture. Vernice died in 1920 and Herbert married second, Lena Guenter in 1922. Herbert and Lena were my grandparents. Given the October 1912 marriage of Herbert and Vernice I would suggest that this photo was taken not later than the summer of that year. Comments...or further information welcome!

Reunion was 1914, at the earliest, 1915, at the latest. Velma was born in February, 1914. Is that a 6 mo old baby climbing around on her grandfather Niles' shoulder or a 1.5 yr old? I'm guessing 6 mo, as World War I was starting, The Guns of August.
