I believe the Vernis/ce Reed shown would be the Vernice Reed who married Herbert Wayne Crosby in 1912. She was the daughter of Melvin Reed, by his first wife Edith (Weiderick) who died in 1893. He married Alice Maltby in Aug 1894. She would be the Alice Reed (Mrs Melvin) in the picture. Vernice died in 1920 and Herbert married second, Lena Guenter in 1922. Herbert and Lena were my grandparents. Given the October 1912 marriage of Herbert and Vernice I would suggest that this photo was taken not later than the summer of that year. Comments...or further information welcome!

Reunion was 1914, at the earliest, 1915, at the latest. Velma was born in February, 1914. Is that a 6 mo old baby climbing around on her grandfather Niles' shoulder or a 1.5 yr old? I'm guessing 6 mo, as World War I was starting, The Guns of August.

HORNELL WOMAN SHOT BY ADMIRER
Wellsville Man Evidently Murders Woman and Commits Suicide
Hornell, N. Y., Aug. 10. (AP) Miss Jennie Williams, 25, was found fatally wounded in bed in her Washington street apartment shortly after 10:00 A. M. today with the body of James Brown, 59, of (44 Fassett street) Wellsville, lying on the floor nearby. Chief of Police Howard M. Travis and Coroner M, G. Burch said it was a clear cut case of murder and suicide.
They were discovered by Mrs Gates Saunders, who shared the apartment.
Miss Williams was rushed to St James Mercy hospital, where she died at 10:50 A. M. She was shot three times in the head.
Brown apparently had been instantly killed by a bullet in the right temple.
In his pocket, said Chief of Police Travis was found a note from Miss Williams asking him to cease his attentions to her. Travis said he had learned Brown came here from Wellsville this morning.
No one heard the shots fired and there were no witnesses who saw Brown enter the apartment. Travis said that Brown was estranged from his wife and child.
______
Travis told the Corning Leader today that he had learned Miss Williams and Brown had been keeping steady company for several months, evidence having been "very friendly as recently as June.
Recently, Chief Travis said, the girl "threw him over." A note was found in the dead man's pocket in which he said he intended to commit suicide and "end my troubles on earth."
The police theory, according to Chief Travis, is that Brown came to Miss Williams' room this morning while she was asleep. She was a waitress, and was not scheduled to resume her duties until 7:00 P. M. tonight.
Brown entered the room and shot Miss Williams in her sleep, police believe, turning the gun on himself. No witnesses of the shooting, nor persons who heard the shots, are known, according to Chief Travis.
When found, Brown had been dead about 30 minutes, it was stated.

MRS. FESSENDEN CALLED BY DEATH
Dorcas Moore Fessenden Fatally Injured in Motor Collision Near Cuba Last Sunday.
Following injuries received in a motor accident which occurred on Sunday afternoon, August 4, near Cuba, N. Y., Mrs. Clifford Fessenden passed away at the Cuba, N. Y. hospital early Wednesday morning. Friends on every side were shocked to hear of her sudden death.
Mrs. Dorcas Moore Fessenden was the daughter of the late William Moore and wife Mrs. Elva Weir Moore, and was born at the Moore homestead on the Portage on November 20, 1891. She was educated in the local schools and later took up the nursing profession at the McGee Hospital in Ohio and the Cook County Hospital at Chicago. Upon graduation from the Chicago institution, she accepted a position at the Warren State Hospital, where she has held a splendid position for the past twenty-five years. She rose to an enviable height in her service to suffering mankind and will be remembered for her many excellent qualities.
She married Clifford Fessenden, son of Mr. and Mrs. N.D. Fessenden, on July 8, 1925. Lately the couple built a pretty new home just south of town on the Portage Rad and life promised much enoyment and contentment for the future.
Surviving are
- her mother, Mrs. Elva Weir Moore of Olean, N. Y., and several cousins,
- Mrs. Lottie McCloskey of Wrights,
- Jay Gallup and Gardner Coleman in the West, and
- Mrs. Vera Weir of Buffalo, NY.
All of her grandparents,
- Mr. and Mrs. Weir of Liberty and
- Mr. and Mrs. James K. Moore of the Portage,
were early pioneer settlers and have left a rich legacy of real worth and industry.
- Her father and
- a brother, James, preceded her in death. The latter was a valued employee of the Pennsylvania Railroad, who met with an accidental death while on duty several years ago.
The accident in which Mrs. Fessenden received her injuries occurred Sunday atternoon about twelve forty-five o'clock at an intersection of the Belfast-Belvidere road when they were struck by a truck owned by the Borden Milk Company of Belmont. The accident was caused, according to State Troopers N. H. Lippert and J. D. Fennell, when both drivers became confused.
Mr. Fessenden, who received lacerations of the face and body, was able to leave the hospital Wednesday and is recovering nicely, although he will need medical attention for some time.
Funeral services will be held Friday afternoon at 2:00 o'clock at the Presbyterian Church, with
- interment in the Lewis Hill cemetery-- Port Allegany Reporter.
