Coatesville, (PA) Betty Oviatt Bowman, 77, of Coatesville, died Thursday (March 28, 2002) at the Brandywine Hospital.
Born in Smethport, (PA) she was the daughter of George and Cecil Burdick Oviatt
A 1942 graduate of Smethport High School, she received her nurses training at Robert Packer Hospital in Sayre and earned a degree in nursing in 1971 and a master's degree in nursing in 1974, both from West Chester University.
She worked as a registered nurse and a school nurse for the Coatesville Area School District for 25 years until her retirement in 1985.
She was a member of the Olivet United Methodist Church.
She was a member of and secretary for the Chester County Nurses Association, a member of the PSEA and PSEAR.
She also served as a volunteer at the Brandywine Hospital and with Meals on Wheels.
Surviving are:
a son John R. Bowman of New York City and of State College,
a daughter Betty Kissell of Coatesville;
three brothers,
- Richard Oviatt of Buffalo, NY,
- Raymond Oviatt of Florida, and
- Morris Oviatt of Coudersport;
four grandchildren and two great-grand-children.
She was preceded in death by a son, Robert W. Bowman Jr. in 1972.
Burial was in Fairview Cemetery, Coatesville, PA

Morris W. Oviatt, 77, of Coudersport, died Friday (January 4, 2008) at the Bradford Regional Medical Center in Bradford.
Born on September 13, 1930 in East Smethport, he was the son of George and Cecile Angeline Burdick Oviatt. On June 20, 1953 in Smethport he married Dona Daugherty who survives.
Mo graduated from Smethport High School in 1948 and from Slippery Rock University with a degree in Health and Physical Education.
He was a veteran of the Korean War having served for five years with the U. S. Navy.
Mo received a masters degree in Health and Physical Education from Penn State University. He taught school in Indiana, PA, Coudersport, and Port Allegany, retiring in 1985. He was basketball coach in Coudersport from 1959-1967 and took the team to the state Class C finals in 1964. He also spent about 10 years as a basketball referee.
In 1976 Mo helped found the Coudersport Volunteer Ambulance Association where he served as president and taught many EMT classes for about 20 years while serving as an EMT in the association. He participated in the Meals-on-Wheels program for the past 22 years. He served 3 three year terms on the Cole Hospital Board of Directors and was currently on the Hospital Authority. Mo was an active member of the Coudersport Golf Club and served two terms as president in the 1980s. He was also a member of Park United Methodist Church. Mo was an AVID Penn State fan and enjoyed going to Penn State football games.
Mo is survived by his wife, Dona;
daughters, Pam (Tim) McCune,
Marsha (Tim) Knoster and
Paula (Tom) Glassmire;
seven grandchildren; one great-granddaughter;
two brothers, Richard (Angie) Oviatt,
Raymond (Patricia) Oviatt;
and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents;
- brother, Russell Oviatt; and
- sister, Betty Oviatt Bowman.
Friends were received at the Fickinger Funeral Home in Coudersport on Sunday (January 6, 2008) from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. and on Monday at Park United Methodist Church from 10 a.m. until 11 a.m., at which time funeral and committal services were held with Reverend Tom Shatto officiating.
- Burial was in Rosehill Cemetery in Smethport.
Memorial contributions may be made to Park United Methodist Church, 15 E. Third Street, Coudersport, PA 16915, or to a charity of the donor's choice.

One of this area's oldest and most esteemed residents, Wellington (Welly) L. Burdick, 95, a descendant of pioneer settlers, died last Sunday at 8 a.m. at his home in East Smethport.
Mr. Burdick was born at Norwich, on May 18, 1870, a son of he late Chordis A. and Violetta Gallup Burdick.
The Burdicks and Gallups were among the first seven families who settled in the unbroken wilderness of Norwich Twp. in 1815.
Mr. Burdick's paternal grandparents, Rowland and Alvira Webb Burdick, came with the first settlers from New York State.
His mother was the daughter of Orin and Nancy Corwin Gallup. The Corwins also were among the "first families" of the Upper Potato Creek Valley.
Wellington Burdick's greatgrandfather, Nathaniel Gallup, was the father of nine sons, including Orin Gallup, and one daughter. At one time, all of the nine sons operated separate farms in the Upper Potato Creek Valley .
Wellington Burdick was employed in Smethport glass factories for many years. He also was a yard foreman for the Smethport Woods Products Co. During his last employment he served 12 years as custodian the East Smethport school.
On Aug. 4, 1896, in Olean, N.Y., he was married to Bessie Rifle of Norwich, who preceded m in death on May 10, 1945. The couple had resided in Norwich for some years before movng to Kane. In 1905 the couple moved to East Smethport.
He was a member of the Evangelical United Brethren Church f East Smethport; a member or more than 50 years of I.O.O.F. No. 389 of Smethport and he served as secretary of Keating Township School Board for 12 years.
Mr. Burdick is survived by son, Howard A. Burdick ; daughters, Mrs. Cecile Oviatt and Mrs. Byron Bickford; six grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Interment was in Rose Hill Cemetery.
Bearers, all members of Independent Order of Odd Fellows, were Merle Dickinson, Tack Hewitt, Fred Herriman, Theodore Haupt, Walter Johnson and Holmes Spanogle.
