One of this area's oldest and most esteemed residents, Wellington (Welly) L. Burdick, 95, a descendant of pioneer settlers, died last Sunday at 8 a.m. at his home in East Smethport.
Mr. Burdick was born at Norwich, on May 18, 1870, a son of he late Chordis A. and Violetta Gallup Burdick.
The Burdicks and Gallups were among the first seven families who settled in the unbroken wilderness of Norwich Twp. in 1815.
Mr. Burdick's paternal grandparents, Rowland and Alvira Webb Burdick, came with the first settlers from New York State.
His mother was the daughter of Orin and Nancy Corwin Gallup. The Corwins also were among the "first families" of the Upper Potato Creek Valley.
Wellington Burdick's greatgrandfather, Nathaniel Gallup, was the father of nine sons, including Orin Gallup, and one daughter. At one time, all of the nine sons operated separate farms in the Upper Potato Creek Valley .
Wellington Burdick was employed in Smethport glass factories for many years. He also was a yard foreman for the Smethport Woods Products Co. During his last employment he served 12 years as custodian the East Smethport school.
On Aug. 4, 1896, in Olean, N.Y., he was married to Bessie Rifle of Norwich, who preceded m in death on May 10, 1945. The couple had resided in Norwich for some years before movng to Kane. In 1905 the couple moved to East Smethport.
He was a member of the Evangelical United Brethren Church f East Smethport; a member or more than 50 years of I.O.O.F. No. 389 of Smethport and he served as secretary of Keating Township School Board for 12 years.
Mr. Burdick is survived by son, Howard A. Burdick ; daughters, Mrs. Cecile Oviatt and Mrs. Byron Bickford; six grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Interment was in Rose Hill Cemetery.
Bearers, all members of Independent Order of Odd Fellows, were Merle Dickinson, Tack Hewitt, Fred Herriman, Theodore Haupt, Walter Johnson and Holmes Spanogle.
