"Sorry this is not the most timely reply, but I just now came across your posting about family ties to Ellison Mounts. I've gathered some information about him and his family from various sources over the past couple of yearrss abecause of my interest in his role in the feud. In my opinion, he and Roseanna McCoy were the two most unfortuante and saddest, victims of the feud.
Elllison was the illegitimate son of Ellison Hatfeld and Harriet Hatfield, who was the daughter of John and Isabelle (Vance) Hatfield. Ellison Hatfield and Harriet Hatfield were first cousins. Ellison "Cotton Top" Mounts was born 1864 and evidently took the Mounts name when his mother married Daniel Mounts in 1867. Little has been published about Ellison Mounts' life beyond his role in the feud - the paw-paw tree killings and the New Year's morning raid on the McCoy home among them - and his hanging in Pikeville, Kentucky on 18 Feb 1890.
The fact is, he was married at the time of his death. He married Rebecca Justice, a daughter of Joab and Elizabeth (Ferrell) Justice on either Dec 1 or Dec 25, 1882. According to the 1880 census, Rebecca was living in the home of Elias Hatfield, was in the home of Daniel Mounts and his age was given as 16 - so there was a big age disparity, as you can see, and this raises some questions in my mind. There is no record of their having had children.
Also, Ellison Mounts had a brother, George, whose name is recorded as both George Hatfield and George Mounts. I've found George Hatfield the more common use of his name. He is also believed by some to have been an illetitimate son of Harriet Hatfield and Ellison Hatfield. George Hatfield or Mounts married Risby Elkins on April 16, 1888. Now, a mystery appears. Barely 18 months later, Risby Hatfield, listed as a widow, marries a James G Grimmett, who was single on 15 Nov 1889 in Logan County, West Virginia. A widow? What happened to George and what or who was the cause of his death? No clue. Also, note that Risby's marriage to Mr. Grimmett occurs three months to the day before Ellison Mounts was hanged. Who can say if that's significant. The last point, local legend says that Harriet Hatfield Mounts died on the day her son was hanged as she traveled on horseback over the mountains to see Ellison for the last time. In fact, others say she actually lived in Bruno, West Virginia until her death by natural causes in 1916.

Ellison Mounts Hatfield was the illigetimate son of Ellison Hatfield. It is not certain who his mother was. But, he grew up in the Ellison Hatfield Sr family. He was slightly mentally slow. Ellison was born in Pikeville, Pike County, Kentucky, date around 1866.
A woman by the name of Sarah Ann Staton born on 1844 is mentioned as his possible mother. She married Ellison Hatfield Sr, on 3 Sept 1865 in Pike County, Kentucky. This Sarah Ann Staton Hatfield died 1935.
For his envolvement in the Hatfield-McCoy feud, Ellison "Cotton Top" Mounts was sent to trial for the murder of Alifair McCoy.
Having limited mental capacity, in a bid for leniency, he pleaded guilty. This decision precipitated the final pivotal event of feud history. On Sept. 4 1889, while Johnse, Cap and Wall received life imprisonment, "Cotton Top" received the harshest of sentences: Death by Hanging.
He believed the Hatfields would break him out.
The gallows, though surrounded by a high fence, were constructed at the base of a hill giving bystanders an unobstructed view of the execution.
On Feb. 18, 1890, more than five thousand bystanders gathered as Ellison Mounts was led up to the platform to meet his fate. With the hangman's noose encircling his neck, Ellison spoke his final words: "The Hatfields made me do it!"
It was the last hanging in Pike County and it brought peace. It had been 40 years since the last public hanging in Pike County and the hangman's area still stands.

Ellison Hatfield Death, 1882
Ellison Hatfield Military Documentation: Ellison enlisted in 45th Virginia Infantry Battalion, Company "B" on 1 May 1863 in his desire to serve the confederacy during the Civil War. He later deserted his company, according to the Dec 31, 1864 roll call.
On election day, August 7, 1882, at the Blackberry Creek precinct, Tolbert McCoy accused "Bad Lias" Hatfield of owing him a small sum of money for a fiddle, but "Bad Lias" protested that the debt had previously been paid. At that point, Tolbert's mood was on the decline. Later in the day, Ellison Hatfield made remarks to Tolbert which led him to turn his wrath on Ellison. Along with his brothers Pharmer and Bud, Tolbert stabbed Ellison 26 times and shot him in the back. Although the McCoys ran and sought cover in the nearby woods, they were captured and put into custody of a justice of the peace and a constable for the trip to the Pikeville jail. Ellison Hatfield was taken on a stretcher to his home in West Virginia. The following day, before the McCoy brothers could be taken to Pikeville, "Devil Anse" organized a posse and took the McCoys away from the guards. The Hatfields took the McCoy boys to an unused schoolhouse on the West Virginia side of Mate Creek. After hearing about the capture of her 3 sons, Sally McCoy rode to "Devil Anse" and demanded to know why they were being held in West Virgina when they should be in jail in Pikeville. His reply was, "I'm holding them to see if Ellison dies. If he dies or gets well, I promise to bring them back to Kentucky alive." Two days later on August 9, 1882, the news came that Ellison Hatfield was dead. The 3 McCoys were marched to the Kentucky side of the Tug River. There they were bound to some pawpaw trees, and within seconds, more than 50 shots were fired into the brothers. "Devil Anse" had kept his promise to bring the boys back to Kentucky alive.
Ellison Hatfield was killed on election day of 1882 at the Blackberry precinct - he was stabbed 26 times and shot in the back of the head by Tolbert, Pharmer, and Bud McCoy. This was one of the events that continued the Hatfield-McCoy Feud.
