FRANK SCHOENDORFER (1867-1935)
Frank Schoendorfer was born March 14, 1867 in Vienna, Austria. He received musical training at the Vienna Conservatory. He came to the United States in 1887 and was engaged with his music in New York City and Philadelphia. Following this he traveled to Germania, PA, with an excursion of artists, and started his band career as organizer and director of the Germania Band. In the ensuing years he organized and directed bands at Ulysses, Coudersport, PA., Corning and Wellsville, NY. He also was engaged as musical instructor and assistant conductor of music at the Mansfield State Normal School. One of his most memorable accomplishment was when he was the baritone soloist in John Philip Sousa’s Band in 1905.
The attached photo depicts the New York Central Railroad Band with Frank Schoendorfer as Director. This photo was taken in front of the Jersey Shore Elks Club on Main Street. As you see in the photo, Frank's Daughter Hilda Schoendorfer Coates and her husband Francis Drew Coates also played in the band at that time. This building stands today and is located on South Main Street in Jersey Shore, PA.
In 1889, two years after Frank’s arrival in America, he married Anna Elizabeth Mosch (1871-1935). I do not have particular details, but I’m sure he met Anna Mosch on his muscial excursion to Germania. Anna was the fifth child of Carl Herman Mosch and Caroline Scheider. Frank is the first of four generations of Frank Shoendorfer’s in this leg of the family. Frank’s son was named Frank Ludwig Schoenoderfer (1902-1968), his son was named Frank Moyer Schoendorfer (b. 1931), and his son was named Frank Moyer Schoendorfer Jr. (b. 1956).

My grandfather Egbert McElroy, married to Hertha Mosch, along with two of his brothers (Frank & Robert), played in Frank's band while working with the NY Central Railroad shops in Avis, PA.
My grandmother talked fondly of being close to her Aunt Anna and her Schoendorfer first cousins, when they lived in Jersey Shore.

HILDA WILHELMINA SCHOENDORFER is the oldest child to Anna Elizabeth Mosch and Frank Schoendorfer. She was born 05 Sep 1891 in Ulysses, PA Hilda’s father at one time was employed as a blacksmith at what was previously known as the Gordnier Foundry on Oak Street in Coudersport, thence Hilda attended high school in Coudersport and graduated in 1909. She married Francis Drew Coates 10 Jun 1913 in Jersey Shore, where her father relocated the Schoendorfer family to head up the New York Central RR Band. Francis was born 25 Mar 1892 in Whitesville, NY to Isabelle O’Connel and Chandler Coates. He died 26 Nov 1949 in Herkimer, NY. Hilda and Francis had one son, Francis James Coates, born 30 Mar 1914 in Jersey Shore, PA. Francis Jr. died 05 Jun 1977 in Massillon, OH. I do not have a timeline for Hilda’s eventual relocation to Florida, but we know that she remarried a previous Coudersport High School classmate, Lawrence Scott Grabe. Lawrence was born 07 Apr 1890 in Coudersport to Emilie Breunle and Gustave Grabe. He and Hilda were married 10 Feb 1969 in Ormond Beach, FL. Their marriage was cut short with his death 01 Mar 1970. Hilda died four years later on 12 Apr 1974 in Ormond Beach.
CHRISTIAN ROBERT MOSCH is the youngest child, sixth son of Karl and Caroline Scheider Mosch. He was born in Germania 18 Nov 1874. On January 15, 1895 he married Elizabeth Flurschutz of DuBruce, NY born September 25, 1876. Christian owned and operated a hotel in Colesburg during the lumbering history of that town. He later conducted a general store there. From Colesburg he moved to Galeton where he opened a clothing store. It was this business that Otto C. Mosch bought in 1908. From there Chris moved to Elmira where he had a men’s clothing store. According to Chris’ great-grandson, Ken Habeck, he also had a real estate business in Elmira and owned many properties. Chris and Elizabeth had three children: Mabel Mosch 1895-1939, Walter Dewey Mosch 1896-1969 and Glenn Ernest Mosch 1901-1986. I don’t have any details, but Mabel was severely handicapped Elizabeth died 19 Sep 1950 and Chris died 09 Aug 1964.
Hilda and Christian are first cousins once removed.

Interesting to see Francis Jr wearing a feather band; something we would have worn in the 1950s.
