William Holton was born at Winston Manor, near Ipswich, Suffolk, England on April 28, 1610. He was the son of Edward Holton and Constance Adkinson. He came to New England on the ship Francis in April of 1634 from Ipswich and settled in Hartford, Connecticut. He was one of the first settlers there and his name is on the original Founders Monument in the Ancient Burying Ground. He married Mary Winche, probably in Hartford, but possibly in England. They had eight children, most likely all born in Hartford.
In 1653 William moved his family to Northampton, Hampshire, Massachusetts where he was one of the eight original petitioners. He was the first deacon of the church in Northampton ordained Jun 13, 1663. He was also a member of the first board of magistrates appointed in 1665. He reprsented Northampton for 5 yrs in the General Court and Hadley for one year, l669. While serving in the General Court, he introduced the first motion known in American history for the suppression of intemperenace. Two of William's daughters, Mary and Sarah, were both married the same day, November l8, l656, the former to David Burt and the latter to John King, which were the lst two marriages solomnized in Northampton.
William died in Northampton on August 2, 1691. His wife died soon after. They are buried in the Bridge Street Cemetery in Northampton.
