| LifeSketch | Anna "Annie" Lucertia Durst was born in Mt. Pleasant, Pa. After marrying Jason, S.A. Millers also performed the ceremony in Accident, Md. She and the family attended the Maple Grove Church, also called Church of the Brethren or the Casselman Church. They were Dunkers--a German Baptist sect established in 1708 known for their dipping (which is the translation of Dunker), baptism by triple immersion, opposition to war, and simplicity of life. The Church of the Brethren is the largest US Dunker sect; Annie\'s church women wore bonnets and washed feet. At home they sang with the kids \"Froggie Went a Courtin.\'\" At first Jason and Annie lived in a log cabin on Negro Mountain (4 miles west of Grantsville and just east of Keyser\'s Ridge) where Roy, Alice, Norman, Elmer, and Perry were born. The Wilburn Cabin was located across from a brick factory and the Casselman River in Jennings and had a kitchen/dining room, small upstairs bedrooms, and living-sleeping room. About 200-300 yards from cabin was a spring house for cooling food and drinks> In 1907 Jason bought 25 acres at Andalusia in Jennings (4 miles south of Grantsville on 495) and the family moved into a wooden house. In 1916 this acreage was sold to Peter Nathan. During the Depression of the 1930s the Wilburns were well fed with bread, milk, and eggs. In 1945 some 60 acres were sold to Galen Beachy. Vera Wilburn McKenzie had this to say about Annie, \"She had a \"5th grade reader\" education, fixed her older sisters\' smoking pipes but did not smoke, went to church, was easy going, bathed her young kids together, prepared meals regularly, stayed home--visiting the Jennings General Store only 2-3 times in her life, weighed about 270 lbs at the end of her life, and died at home in a chair.\" She had 10 children. She is buried next to Jason in Grantsville Cemetery. | |
