• Donald Toombs Loses Life in Motor Accident When Machine Leaves Road
Donald Toombs died in the Couders port General Hospital at 2:00 o'clock Sundav afternoon following a motor accident which had occurred twelve hours previously. The unfortunate vnune- man in company with Earl Coons had attended the movies Satur- day evening. Following the show, they had driven to Colesburg and were re turning shortly before midnight. There was a dense fog. At Frinks Station the motor car left the road and plunged over an embankment Into the Allegheny River bed, now almost dry because of the continued drought.
Just before the crash Donald exclaimed - to Earl, who was driving, We're leaving the road!"
The machine passed through the small space where there is no guard rail and both young men were thrown through the top, although it is said they were traveling slowly because of the fog.
Coons stated that he was unconscious for a time, he does not know how long, and when he began to realize he heard Donald calling for help. He made several attempts to rise before he was successful. Finally he reached his companion and raised him up but Donald said he was more comfortable lying down.
After a struggle Coons climbed the steep embankment and tried to stop a car. The first one to pass the driver either failed to see him or refused to give aid. The next machine was occupied by two Ulysses young men. They stopped and Donald was taken to the hospital.
Donald Toombs was born in Coudersport and would have been 19 years old had he' lived until October 27. He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. James Toombs and they with the following brothers and sisters survive:
Mrs. Mary Cornell, Rochester;
Marlin, Paul, Helen and Walter, of Coudersport.
The young man was a stalwart youth who was well liked by all who knew him, and deepest sympathy goes out to his sorrowing parents and brothers and sisters.
Funeral services were held from the family home yesterday afternoon at 2:30 with Rev. John O. Woods and Rev. A. M. Dietterich officiating.
Burial was made in Eulalia Cemetery.
TWO BIRTHDAYS HONORED
