MARRIED AMELIA MARCH 15,1849
Suggested edit: It is with much regret that the citizens generally of Potter County and especially the residents of Austin learned of the death of E.O. Austin the founder of that borough, which occurred at his home there on Sunday afternoon. Mr. Austin was stricken with paralysis about three weeks ago and from that death ensued.
Potter County could not have lost a man that has exerted any more influence for it that the deceased and it was with true regret in each acquaintance's heart that the heard of his demise.
Mr. Austin by the following children : R.S. and J.F. Austin of Austin; Commissioner Charles Austin, of Coudersport; Thomas of Buffalo; Mrs Benjamin Pelton of Farmer's Valley and Miss Agnes Austin, of Austin.
The funeral of E.O. Austin was held at his home in Austin, Wednesday afternoon, at two o'clock and business was at a standstill there, the entire town showing honor to the founder of the place. The funeral was under Masonic Auspices, as he was charter member of the Arcana Lodge, having taken his demit from Eulalia Lodge at Coudersport. There were many Masons present from surrounding towns. Burial was made in the Austin Cemetery.
The historical sketch in the History of Potter County published in 1890, has the following to say about this distinguished man:
E.O. Austin was a son of Orrameal Austin being born in Greene, Chenango County, N.Y., in December 1825, and received a limited education in his native county, and in 1841 came with his parents to White's Corners, Harrison Township, Potter County, Pa., remaining there until 1856 when he removed to what is now the borough of Austin. He build the road from North Hollow, now to Costello, to his place a distance of three miles and later built the road from Austin to Keating Summit, that he might get railroad facilities.
He purchased a large tract of timber land on the ground where Austin borough stands and followed it up with getting large industries to locate in the town that bears his name. In 1885 the Goodyear Lumber Company located its mammoth plant there and it has proven to have been an excellent industry for the town.
Being a civil engineer he did much work in surveying the to county a number of years ago, and his work in that line still remains as the standard. The town of Austin located on 147 acres owned by Mr. Austin, was laid out by him, which became incorporated as a borough in October 19, 1888, and he has always worked for its advancement.
Mr. Austin began life as a poor boy, and his own hard work amassed a competency. He was elected Justice of the Peace in 1857, serving continuously up to the of his death; served Potter County as a commissioner for two terms being first elected in 1863, and for nearly a half century served as a school director. He was Civil War Veteran, serving from 1862 to July of 1865, and was chief clerk in the department of Palmico. He holds membership in Eulalia Lodge, No.342, F& A. M. of Coudersport.
Mr. Austin in earlier days was correspondent for many newspapers, a facile and interesting writer and a man of general information concerning historical events in Potter County. The Historical Reminiscences of Potter County now on file in Harrisburg with the State Historical Society is the work of Mr. Austin and he was also a valued contributor to Egle's History of Pennsylvania.
Mr. Austin read law and was admitted to the bar but never practiced to any great extent, but used his know for his own benefit. He was a leading citizen of Austin and no man in the county has more extensive influence or is more widely know or respected. He was married in 1849 to Amelia Steadman, who died leaving five children. He afterwards married Julia Allington and to them been born three children.

Edward Oramel Austin (December 1825 – August 1, 1909) was a settler and founder of Austin, Pennsylvania.
Biography
Edward Oramel Austin was born in December 1825 in Greene, New York, to Oramel Austin.[1][2] He traveled to Whites Corners, Potter County, Pennsylvania in 1841 along with his parents. He stayed there until 1856, when he settled in Freeman Run, Potter County, Pennsylvania.[3]
Austin lived in a small cabin he built which is now Main Street in Austin. In 1878 he built a larger home. There now stands a replica of Austin's home very close to where it originally stood. It houses a museum dedicated to him, the Austin Dam, the flood of 1911, and the overall history of the town. The original home was destroyed by the 1911 flood.[4] He was a surveyor by trade. Also, he was a Justice of the Peace his entire life.
After first settling in Austin, which at the time was part of Sylvania Township, Austin built a road of 3 miles (4.8 km) from his place to Costello, formally North Wharton. Later, in 1870, he built a state road from Austin to Keating Summit, to give a railroad connection to Austin. The clearing of his tract of land in Austin ultimately led to great manufacturing interests, and industrial development. Therefore, he was able to bring in the business of Mr. Garretson.[3] He also helped convince Goodyear Lumber Company to bring its Mammoth plant to Austin in 1885.[1][5] The borough of Austin was named after him and it was officially incorporated in October 1888. He actually owned the 147 acres on which the town was built. Because of his skills as a civil engineer and land surveyor he was able to draw plans to lay out the town as he saw fit.[1][3] He surveyed parts of Potter County and incorporated the borough of Austin on October 19, 1888.[1][5]
From 1847 to 1849, Austin spent time studying law, although he had no intention of practicing. He also did some writing about Potter County which was incorporated in Egle's History of Pennsylvania.[3] He became justice of the peace in 1857 and served in the role until his death.[1] He was a school director for 40 years.[citation needed] Austin was elected county commissioner in 1863 and served two terms.[5] He was a member of the Union Army during the Civil War,[5] serving from late 1862 until July 1865.[1] He was chief clerk in the Palmico department.[1] He was a member of the Masons at the level of Master Mason.[citation needed] He was a charter member of the Arcana Lodge.[1]
Family
He was first married on March 15, 1849, to Amelia Steadman. Together they had five children. Following the death of his wife in March 1875 he married Julia Allington Wales. Together they had three children. She died May 3, 1906, at the family home in Austin.[1][6]
Austin died on August 1, 1909, at his home in Austin. He was buried in Austin Cemetery.[1][5]

Subject: Sarah A. Hollenbeck
Hi John, Do you know anything else about Conrad Hollenbeck's & Rebecca Edward's daughter Sally?
I believed she was Isaac Wykoff's first wife.
They had two children:
- Lucy Wykoff b/12 Sept 1860, m/31 July 1875 to Charles Douglas Austin, d/13 Aug 1889 and another daughter named
- Ellen Wykoff born 31 July 1868 and married 19 July 1883 to Emery McCloskey.
Ellen Wykoff shows up in the census as adopted granddaughter to Charles Wykoff and Eleanor Jordan Wykoff. She was their grand daughter. Charles was Isaac's father.
Lucy stayed with Isaac when he married Elizabeth Gibbs.
This is my line. Isaac is my great grand father.
A woman in Michigan said Eliz. Gibbs was the housekeeper when Sally was going to have Ellen.
Do you know if Sally or Sarah died in child birth or maybe Isaac just left her? I don't know why but I would love to be able to communicate with my half or step great grand mother's relatives. Some one recently asked me if I was sure Sarah or Sally was Isaac's wife and I said I have no proof. Now I'm back to that old brick wall. I sure hope you can help me.
Many thanks for taking the time to read this email.
Mary Jo Wykoff Sibel.
