WARNING: This is not Henry Knickerbocker (the son of Peter and Hannah). Unfortunately this myth keeps popping up on Findagrave, and people keep attaching "Charles Knickerbocker" to family members of Henry, Peter, and Hannah. If you are are looking for Henry then I have bad news: Henry probably died in Iowa, but Henry's grave has never been found. PLEASE READ BELOW .
This is the grave of Charles Knickerbocker (1820-1896). Charles owned this farm for about 30 years. Thus, the burial ground became known as being on the "Old Knickerbocker Farm".
We can piece together Charles's story thanks to census records, newspaper articles, and his tombstone. There is also a published history of the Cleveland family that helped fill in some of the details. Also, many thanks to the Painted Hills Genealogy Society for their help.
Charles was the son of Solomon Knickerbocker (1785-1831), who was born in Connecticut and died in Steuben County NY. Charles was a sixth generation Knickerbocker. (1-Harmen Janse / 2-Lawrence / 3-John / 4-Abraham / 5-Solomon / 6-Charles.)
Charles's first wife was Louisa Harding (1820-1850) of Steuben County. Louisa was the daughter of Abraham Harding and Esther Cleveland. Charles and Louisa had two children: Alma Knickerbocker Brewster Stryker (1843-1896) (memorial 98071001) and Jerome Knickerbocker (1847-1927) (memorial 98072352).
Louisa Knickerbocker died in the summer of 1850. Louisa probably died in Steuben County NY, although her name was later included on Charles' tombstone in Potter County PA.
After Charles lost his first wife, a young woman named Samantha Ingley became the nanny for Charles's children. Samantha was the daughter of Jeremy Ingley and his wife Polly, who lived in Steuben County.
Charles eventually married Samantha. Charles and Samantha never had any additional children.
(If you see other children attached to this memorial, it is wrong, and is caused by the confusion between "Charles" and "Henry".)
Charles was recorded five times in census records: 1850 in Steuben Co NY; 1855 in Allegany Co NY; and then 1860, 1870, and 1880 in Potter Co PA.
The 1855 NY State census shows that Charles was born in Chenango County.
In the 1880's, newspaper stories mentioned that Charles Knickerbocker of Coudersport visited his brother Henry Knickerbocker in Steuben County. Probate records for Solomon Knickerbocker confirm that Solomon's children included sons named Henry and Charles. Census records confirm that Solomon Knickerbocker and his family lived in Delaware Co. (where Henry was born) in 1810, and Chenango Co. (where Charles was born) in 1820.
Charles's brother Henry is grave # 104660350. Their father, Solomon Knickerbocker, died in Steuben County in 1831, but Solomon's grave has never been found.
In 1866, Charles Knickerbocker bought a farm in Potter County. There was already a small family burial ground on the property. The burial ground may have been started by earlier owners of the farm, Mathias Reed (1793-1862) and his wife Sarah Cleveland. Charles Knickerbocker qualifies as being part of the extended Reed family, because Sarah Cleveland Reed was the aunt of Louisa Harding Knickerbocker. This family connection might explain how Charles wound up buying the farm.
Note: Due to mistakes on many popular genealogy websites, this "Charles Knickerbocker" is often confused with another Potter County man named "Henry Knickerbocker." This makes absolutely no sense. Henry was not the same person as Charles. (Henry was the son of Peter Knickerbocker and his wife Hannah. Henry and his wife Mary can be found in the census in 1850 and 1860 in Potter Co PA, and in 1870 in Clayton Co IA.)
