From Patty Vella, 14.May 2001, from MayBell Dingman Mattison to be read at a family reunion- year unknown (MayBell died in 1947)-
Turn your thoughts to 1840, when our other grandfather and grandmother and family (Isaac and Amy Ellsworth Brock), came to Hebron. Can you young people visualize the trip? A yoke of oxen, and six weeks on the road from Grafton, NY to Hebron, Potter Co, PA-- a day's trip, or a little more, with your automobile. Imagine them reaching here and choosing a spot, cutting down trees, and clearing a space large enough, at first, to build a log cabin. Then the real struggle began, to keep the wolf from the door in more than one sense of the word. I've listened to my mother tell how, as a child, she had sat on the door-step and listened to the howling of the wolves close by. The future can never bring anything to us that we should be more proud of than our brave old ancestors, "heroes and heroines."
Mother dear (Mary Angeline Brock Dingman) was only six monhs old when she made that trip. But I fancy she was as happy as any of the weary travelers. Often it was hard to find a place to stop overnight. Grandma said once, they stopped at an inn, but everything was so mysterious and queer, they were afraid to stay after resting the stock. (I think they brought a cow and a calf.) Then they started on the road again. How worn and weary they must have been before they reached Potter Co! ___________________

IN THE EARLY DAYS
OF COUDERSPORT
Paper By John Sohollard, of Hebron, Read Before the Potter County Historical Society.
I was born in Coudersport in the year 1852. My people came here some time in the forties and settled in Coudersport. My father's occupation was railroading. That being a very poor occupation for a man in those days in Coudersport he went on the Erie Railroad as a brakeman on the passenger train running from New York to Covington, as the road was built only to that point at that time.
...
Mr. Brown, who sometimes did clerical work, but his occupation was that of an iron molder. His place of business was where the silk mill now stands. Just above was the town carpenter and contractor, Eli Rees.

On the other side of the street, where the Potter Gas Company now is, was a Mr. Judd, who kept postoffice. Where the Knight building now is, the Spencers ran the candy store and supplied the young people with sweets as a atter of course.
Back to Main Street, in the block was the store of C.S. Jones who sold groceries and a few other supplies. ... Also, the Armstrongs made to measure boots and ladies' shoes, guaranteed to wear a whole year or to be repaired for nothing. On the lower corner was the Bill Jones General Store where deer was bought and shipped by teams to Pottsville and carried to market to Philadelphia and sold.
On the next corner, where the Crittenden now stands, was the hotel kept by the genial Sam Mills where refreshments were bought for three cents a glass.
On the other corner across from the Crittenden House was a store run by J.B. Smith. On the corner where the Potter County Garage now stands was the Hickory Hotel, or Cartee House.
... There was also a WR. Starkweather, who claimed to be the best ox-shoer in town. There was also Mr. Thompson, the wagon-maker.
The legal minds were Mr. Maynard, Mr. Ellis and J.S. Mann. Other residents living in the town were Timothy Ives, Arch F. Jones, W.M. Metzgar, Ben Rennells, Judge Ross, Abiather rounseville, W.B. Gordnier, Albert Goodsell, Brum Rorabacher. I must also make mention of Jake Reed, who made the drive and felled fifty acres of timber before breakfast on a Sunday morning.

Unfortunately, my father was killed at a later date at Wellsville Station, N. Y. State, when I was only ' nine months old. It was rather a hard proposition for my mother, as, at that age, I was perhaps more of an item of expense than an asset. The point that I want to bring out is that Coudersport had generous people in the forties and fifties; but not nearly as many as now. Way Back When
Remember when Charlie Maynard played the trap drum in the West Street Theater and Swingall, the hypnotist, tried to put the "fishy eye" on him? Charlie wouldn't budge.
-- M.L.C.
Remember the days at Hull's when the bark peelers came to town? There was always blood all over the hotel porch the following morning.
-- M.M.G.
Remember when we all quit school in april to get a job in the bottle factory up at Ladona?
-- D.T.K.
There was the old Metzger sawmill that stood at the head of East street where Mrs. A.F. Smith now resides. Owen Metzger was the head sawyer. Cephas Niles on the lath machine. Bill Thomas was fireman and others, now forgotten. The pond was along the side of the street, where Mrs. Howard Stone now lives, and we used to skate on it.
Back of West street, on Second street where Benj. Rennells had a barn, was the old ashery where potash was made. A Mr. Rose operated it. Upon the hill lived the Starkweathers, and the old road leading down the river, went up the hill from Third street, near A.B. Mann's, and followed along the hill and came out near the Chestnut street bridge. Again it was changed and came down the hill near Kathleen Stephens' and finally along the Braitling stone quarry.
Before the Fair Grounds were built, the horse races were run on the straight stretch from the Eulalia Cemetery, down below Uncle Seth Taggart's (Julius Colcord's). There was a board fence on either side of the road and it was pretty frail. The crowd would go down and sit on the fence to witness the races, when down would go a length or two, and they would move down and get a new seat and then down it would go. By the time the race was over, Uncle Seth's fence on both sides of the road was nearly all broken down.
David White, Sol Ross, Mart Larrabee, Will Thompson and Marlin Olmsted all had racers and Ike Dingman a mule he rode bareback. The purse was $10; time 4 or 5 minutes. Most of the time Ike's mule won unless they kept him out.
Bill Brown was going up to Corsaw's after oats. He met Brum Rorabacher near Cephas Nelson's. Brum was a fighter and a strong man. He stumped Bill to trade horses. They finally did so right in the road. Bill went on, Brum came to Coudersport and stopped at Bill's hotel. When Bill returned, Brum said to him "Say, Bill, that horse of yours was blind." "That's all right" says Bill, "so was yours."

Way Back When
Remember when Charlie Maynard played the trap drum in the West Street Theater and Swingall, the hypnotist, tried to put the "fishy eye" on him? Charlie wouldn't budge.
