John and Bobby -
I want to send this information while it's fresh on my mind.
Yesterday I was at the Family History Library in Salt Lake City again. A friend likes to go once a week, so I guess we're back 'in the groove', though I'm never sure where I'll fit that into my life.
I tried to find the birth record for Clara Agnes Mays to figure out whether she was born 30 Dec 1842 or 1843. I didn't find it, but I'm getting closer. I did find a record of her marriage to John Spring on 4 Jan 1867. We already had the information, but it's fun to have a copy of the original. (Someday I'll get one to you.) Eliza Ann Mays (a sister) and William Henry Mays (a brother) were witnesses.
I also found the marriage of Clara Agnes' older sister, Rebekah, to George Brown on 11 July 1859; he was a shoemaker. Eliza Ann Mays was a witness at her marriage too. All this was in: Marriages at St. Paul's, Bedford, Bedfordshire 1813 - 1867. Film #0952398.
Today I received a wonderful letter from Bob Spring in Tacoma. He said that years ago Harriet Salmen visited relatives in Bedford, England and later gave him interesting accounts on the 8 surviving children of James Mays and Anne Wildman. I must send a copy of that. He said to look on the internet for Dr. William Henry Mays, who became a prominent San Francisco surgeon. Incidentally, I was certain she had told me that too, but I haven't been able to find anything when I've looked; I must try again. (In Bob's letter, he says that Aunt Harriet told him William Mays graduated from U.C. in 1877; also, he lived in Sausalito . . perhaps that and other information he gave me will help)
More later. . . Carol
