| Settled to | John Davis settled in this county by the early part of 1799, he is listed on the May 1799 tax list with 200 acres on "Spring Creek." Born in Augusta county, Virginia, December 12, 1758, he was the son of another John Davis, whose parents came to America from Wales. He was a veteran of the Revolution, having served as a private in the Virginia Line. He enlisted after New Year\'s day, 1776, in Botetourt county. After about ten month\'s service he became incapacitated by \"ague and fever.\" His brother, Thomas, visited him about this time and finding him so ill, arranged with the consent of his officers to take his place until he recovered. After regaining his health, Davis reenlisted and served under various generals - Wayne, Steuben, Lafayette, and Washington. He was at the seige of Yorktown. There one night, while standing guard, he had about one-half of his gun barrel cut off in his hands by the bursting of a shell. His clothes were put on fire and he was rendered speechless and senseless for some time. Other guards put out the fire and he soon recovered. He liked to tell in later days how he watched His Majesty\'s red-coated troops, once so proud and confident, march out to surrender to the American army. Davis married Mourning Guffey, sister of Ephraim and Henry Guffey. He moved first to Sevier county, Tennessee and about 1798 or 1799 he moved to this county, settling not on Spring Creek, but in that immediate neighborhood of the later Davis Chapel Church. His wife, Mourning, died around 1804, soon after moving to Kentucky and Davis never remarried. He died here September 30, 1841. | |
