| LifeSketch | Jemima Jefferson was the daughter of Capt. Thomas Jefferson, II (LZYY-9PN) who was President Thomas Jefferson's grandfather. Jemima was his paternal aunt, and half-sister to his father, Peter Jefferson. Jemima has continuously been erroneously placed as a child of Peter Jefferson and Jane Randolph. Jemima was born about 1730 or earlier which means Jane Randolph was only 10 years old or younger when Jemima was born. So, it is NOT possible that Jemima was the daughter of Peter Jefferson and Jane Randolph. Consequently, Jemima was NOT the president\'s sister since she was his aunt. As his aunt, Jemima\'s children were first cousins to President Thomas Jefferson. This conclusion is confirmed as a fact, based on historical sources in the 1800s including \"History of Logan County\" written in 1896 by Henry Ragland which indicated Jemima\'s children claimed to be first cousins to President Thomas Jefferson. Most researchers agree Jemima was the daughter of Peter\'s father Capt. Thomas Jefferson, II, and a lady whose identity is unknown. Jemima Jefferson was not the daughter of the captain\'s wife Mary (Field) who died in 1715, which was about 15 years before Jemima was born in 1730. Many of Jemima\'s descendants have taken an autosomal DNA test which has revealed many of her descendants are a genetic match to descendants of all the other children of Capt. Thomas Jefferson, II, and supports the conclusion Jemima was also a child of the captain and was the president\'s aunt. The source for this error is due to the misidentification of Jemima Jefferson with Jane Jefferson who was the daughter of Peter Jefferson and Jane Randolph. They are NOT one and the same. Unfortunately, people have continuously and mistakenly identified Jemima with President Thomas Jefferson\'s sister Jane. Research proves they are two entirely different SEPERATE people and are NOT one and the same. Anyone who suggests otherwise, has not done sufficient research, especially since Monticello has specifically stated Thomas Jefferson\'s sister Jane, who was born in 1740, was never married and died young in 1765 without having any offspring, whereas Jemima (Jefferson) Collins-Davis, the wife of John Davis, was born about 1725 and had a large family and didn\'t die until after she gave birth to her final child AFTER 1770. Further clarification to distinguish Jemima Jefferson from Jane Jefferson is provided immediately below... Jemima Jefferson (b. abt. 1730 - d. aft. 1770) d/o Capt. Thomas Jefferson, II, and an unidentified person. Jane Jefferson (b. 1740 - d. 1765) d/o Peter Jefferson and Jane Isham Randolph. As anyone can see, they can NOT be the same person and they are NOT one and the same. Also, according to the earliest recorded sources in the 1800s, Jemima NEVER used the name Jane. Jemima was born about 1730 which was five years after her father Capt. Thomas Jefferson, II made his will in 1725 which explains why Jemima was not included in her father\'s will. It is also possible Jemima was born shortly after Thomas made his will in 1725 when he was only about 48 years old which was after his second wife Alice Ailsey (Ward) had died in 1724. Since he was such a young widower, it is likely he had another wife or at least a consort who was the mother of Jemima Jefferson. Jemima passed away after 1770 since her last child was born in 1770 according to the 1870 census which stated Jemima\'s daughter Elizabeth was born in 1770 since the census shows Elizabeth was 100 years old in 1870. John Davis who was a resident of Virginia married Mrs. Jemima Collins, whose maiden name was Jefferson, a relative of Thomas Jefferson. John Davis\' children were: Robert, Thomas, William, James, John, Mary, Jemima, Elizabeth, and possibly Mildred Esther. John and Jemima\'s son Robert\'s maternal grandson Constant Elisha Watson Davis stated in his manuscript \"The Davis Family\", written in 1892, that Robert\'s mother, Jemima (Jefferson) Collins Davis was related to President Thomas Jefferson. This claim was later confirmed by the previously mentioned source \"History of Logan County, West Virginia\", which was written in 1896. taken from https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Jefferson-717 | |
