• She follows dad's lead, picks military career
By David Hawkins Staff writer
A Carlisle High School graduate will be featured on public television's MacNeil Lehrer Newshour Tuesday at 6p.m.
Capt Gerard Snook, who recently completed a tour of duty at Fort Bragg, where she commanded an engineering company, is one of West Point's first female graduates.
"She has been very pleased with commanding a company and working with people," says her father, retired Col. Robert Gerard, a professor of national security affairs at the Army War College.
"That's an important thing for career people, to be sucessful in command," he says.

female officer will be interviewed on the TV show "because all of the women graduates of the military academies will be finishing their first required commitments of five years," Gerard says.
"Graduates of military acadamies are required to spend five years in the military before returning to civilian life," he explains.
After completing that time they are eligible to resign "and the Army would have to honor that wish.
"Way back when they went in, there was a lot of discussion on whether women would stay in or get out" after the first term, Gerard recalls.
His daughter, who met her husband, Capt. Scott Snook, at West Point, are staying in. Kathi Snook will study mathematics at Boston University while her husband will attend Harvard.
This weekend, the couple were "doing a reconnaissance of Boston" to look for housing, Gerard says. They were unavailable for comment.
After completing two-year master's programs at their respective schools, they will go back to West Point as instructors for three years.
Capt. Snook first considered West Point when it opened its doors to women while she was a senior at Carlisle High School in 1976, Gerard says.
She received a presidential appointment to the school and graduated as the highest ranking woman in her class.
"I think it's true that most career women officers have some concern that they will be able to move upward in rank and responsibility," Gerard admits. "I don't know how that will affect her career.
"Both Kathi and her husband are hoping to get back to the field and command postions," he says.
Gerard emphasizes he "made a point of trying to avoid putting pressure on Kathi and my other youngsters" to go into the military.
Nevertheless, he says he is "very pleased" with their career choices.
Two more of his eight children are graduates of military academies and another is attending the Merchant Marine school. Others in the family include:
Robert a law school student;
Valerie, a teacher married to a Navy air crewman;
Diane, an Army first lieutenant stationed in Hawaii;
Michael, a ski instructor;
David, a recent graduate of West Point;
Charles, in his first year at the Merchant Marine Academy; and
Mary, a junior at Carlisle High School.
