History of Allen Pinson (son of Thomas and Mary (Polly) Denny Pinson
Written by Henry P. Scalf
Found in Vol. VI of “The East Kentuckian/June 1970 Part III
Allen Pinson, born 1785 in either Grayson county, Va., or Granville County, N.C. He married Elizabeth Smith, formerly the wife of William Smith whom she had married 2 Jan 1834 in Tazewell Co., Va. Eight children were born to the first union, seven to the second? (Is he talking about the first union as being Margaret and then the second marriage to Elizabeth?)
Margaret Belcher was a daughter of the Revolutionary War soldier and Pike County Pioneer, George Belcher. Her father was born in Amelia county, Va., in 1760. George Belcher married first, Sally Powell, and second Mary Fugate. Margaret Pinson was a daughter of the second marriage. George Belcher enlisted in Capt James Foster’s company, Fifteenth Virginia Regiment, Lt., Col. Innes commanding, 20 Jan 1777 and participated in the battles of Morristown, white Plains, Middle Brook and other engagements. Migrating to the then Floyd co., Ky., now Pike county, about 1805, he served as Floyd County Justice of the Peace. There is a tradition that George Belcher went to Ohio in search of land and died there and was buried at North Bend, near Cincinnati.
Elizabeth Lee came from the distinguished Lee family of Virginia. She was born 11 Sep 1811, in Bedford county, Virginia to Alexander Lee, born 1770, Powhatan County, Virginia, and Sarah Gutherie Lee, first cousins, born 1780, also Powhatan county. Alexander Lee was a son of William and Ave Noel Lee, Bedford County, and Sarah was a daughter of Capt., John and Susannah Price Lee, Campbell county, Virginia. William and John Lee were sons of Charles and Ann Lee, Cumberland County, Virginia. Alexander and Sarah Lee were married 7 Mar 1795 in Campbell co., Va. They were living in Russell county, Virginia in 1850.
Elizabeth Lee and her first husband, married in 1834, were parents of two children: Eliza Jane, married Zode Young; and Robert, married Elzira Young. Elizabeth and William smith left the New Garden Section of Russell county, Va., and migrated to the Brushy Fork of Johns Creek, Pike County, Ky., about 1836. They separated and she remarried to Allen Pinson, 6 July 1843, Pike Co. she died 16 Sept 1898 and lies buried on the Bent Ridge Cemetery at Meta, Pike County.
Allen Pinson resided at the mouth of Bent Branch, a tributary of John’s Creek and engaged chiefly in agricultural pursuits. Man of his descendants, contrary to the inclination of others of the Pinson families, chose to remain in the region the family had pioneered. Allen became the ancestor of many outstanding civil and public servants. His death was tragic. His wife, an invalid, was in bed, smoking an old clay pipe. Allen was sitting nearby. The bed covering caught fire from the pipe and Allen in trying to smother it out, got on fire himself. He died from the effects of the burns 18 Nov, 1858. He was 73 years old. He, too, was buried on the Bent Ridge Cemetery.
Issue of Allen Pinson and Margaret Belcher Pinson were:
1. Aaron Pinson, born 1809, married Ellender King
2. Martha Pinson, born 1812 md Richard Maynard
3. Mary (Polly Pinson, born 1815 md. James Bevins, son of Thomas Bevins.
4. George Pinson, Sr., a Baptist minister, born 1817, md. Sarah Bevins, dau. Of Thomas Bevins Sr.
5. Elizabeth Pinson, born 1818, died 1831.
6. Sarah Pinson, md Ferrell Williamson
7. Margaret (Polly) Pinson, md. James Harris
8. Thomas Stovall Pinson, md. Sarah E. Hurt
Child #4 Rev. George Pinson, Sr was a leader in Democratic politics for years in Pike Co. He served as Pike County Assessor for 15 years and was a minister of the Baptist church. He and Sarah Bevins Pinson were parents of eight children, the fourth child being George W. (Wash) Pinson, who too, attained to prominence in local politics. Wash taught school in his early years, married Mrs. Mary Scott Ratliff, daughter of A.J. (Jack) Scott, 23 Dec 1886. He engaged successfully in the mercantile business on John’s Creek for many years. In 1886 he defeated his cousin, Bart Belcher, for Circuit Court Clerk, by 87 votes. He md second, Sally Auxier, widow of Ben Auxier, Sr. He died 19 Oct 1917.
Notes of Marie Erickson and bible records of Mrs. Murray of Meta, Ky. She said that Allen married first Margaret Ann Belcher who was the daughter of George Belcher the soldier of Rev. Then he married an Elizabeth Lee. Between Marie's family group and the 1850 census of Pike Co., Ky. In this census, Allen is 65 born in Va. Elizabeth is 39 born in Va., Children: Eliza J. age 16 born in Va., Robert 13 born in Ky, (these first two children are listed as Pinsons, but from Henry P. Scalf's records (see sources), they are from Elizabeth's first marriage to William Smith. Supposedly they divorced before she married Allen.) John 10, Ky., Henry C. 8 Ky., Nancy 6 Ky., Susannah age 5 Ky., Sophia age 3 Ky., and Malinda 6 months born in Ky.(March 1850). I do not have a death date in any of the records for Margaret Belcher, Allen's first wife.
