Edwards Dies At Her Home Here Highly respected Mrs. Clara B. Edwards, a Coudersport resident for 40 years, died at her South East St. home last night (Tuesday, Aug. 14, 1Q62). She had been ill four months and hospitalized more or less of that time. Mrs. Edwards was born at Stannards, N. Y., Nov. 11, 1880. She was a daughter of Printice and Jennie Miller Beebe. She married George Edwards in Coudersport Aug. 5, 1905. Mr. Edwards died in 1922. Mrs. Edwards served as secretary to the late Attorney A. N. Crandall, was an employee of the First National Bank, employed in the courthouse and by the Department of Public Assistance. Deceased was active in the Order of the Eastern Star, Daughters of American Colonists, SHG, and the Office Girls Club. She was a mernber of Park Methodist Church. Survivors are - one son, Robert Edwards, Buffalo, and - a sister, Mrs. Grace Weldy, Coudersport and there are several nieces and nephews. Friends will be received after 7:00 o'clock this evening at the Grabe Funeral Hqme. Funeral service will be at 2:00 p.m. Friday. - Burial will be in Eulalia Cemetery Coudersport. George Burt, better known as "Jakie" Burt, committed suicide Saturday evening at the family" home on Third street in Roulette. He planned to send other members of the family from the home and after doing so sent a bullet crashing through his brain. For years he was an employee of the Gray Chemical Company but for a long period he had been physically incapacitated. He leaves to mourn his loss his wife, two sons Vernon and Guy, two daughters Elizabeth and Evelyn, also , his mother. Funeral services were held from the home Tuesday afternoon and burial was made in the Card Creek cemetery. Mary Erway Welfling Founded in 1867, the National Grange is the nation’s oldest general farm and rural public interest organization. Its history is one of progress and achievements for farmers and rural communities across the U.S.. Much of the National Grange’s history has been groundbreaking: it was the first nationwide farm organization to give women full voice and vote, more than a half-century before the adoption of Universal Suffrage in the U.S. In 1870, the National Grange became the first national farm organization to attempt to organize African American farmers following the Civil War. A system of cooperative business organization was introduced by the National Grange early in its history, developing into successful national and regional farm cooperatives. In 1876, the constitutionality of Granger Laws was affirmed by the U.S. Supreme Court. Beginning in 1916 through 1941, the National Grange secured passage of federal legislation to assist struggling farmers by strengthening their property rights and their bargaining position. The National Grange has continued to support farm legislation, as well as multilateral trade negotiations and food aid programs to open foreign markets to U.S. farmers. Its representatives were present to advise the U.S. delegation at the founding of the United Nations in 1945. It brought European farm teenagers to live with Grange families following World War II, to learn about modern agriculture practices and the advantages of democracy. It has participated in agricultural development programs for the U.S. Peace Cops. The organization was also instrumental in organizing rural electric cooperatives, telephone cooperatives, water service cooperatives, public utility districts, volunteer fire departments, and state police programs across the U.S. All these measures began with support at a local level. Today, the grange maintains that voice. In Pennsylvania, it serves its members with a credit union in Harrisburg and provides health insurance to groups such as farmers. At one time, farmers could only insure their machinery through the grange. Edwards Dies At Her Home Here Highly respected Mrs. Clara B. Edwards, a Coudersport resident for 40 years, died at her South East St. home last night (Tuesday, Aug. 14, 1Q62). She had been ill four months and hospitalized more or less of that time. Mrs. Edwards was born at Stannards, N. Y., Nov. 11, 1880. She was a daughter of Printice and Jennie Miller Beebe. She married George Edwards in Coudersport Aug. 5, 1905. Mr. Edwards died in 1922. Mrs. Edwards served as secretary to the late Attorney A. N. Crandall, was an employee of the First National Bank, employed in the courthouse and by the Department of Public Assistance. Deceased was active in the Order of the Eastern Star, Daughters of American Colonists, SHG, and the Office Girls Club. She was a mernber of Park Methodist Church. Survivors are - one son, Robert Edwards, Buffalo, and - a sister, Mrs. Grace Weldy, Coudersport and there are several nieces and nephews. Friends will be received after 7:00 o'clock this evening at the Grabe Funeral Hqme. Funeral service will be at 2:00 p.m. Friday. - Burial will be in Eulalia Cemetery Coudersport. Beebe: Henry Harold Beebe was born at Ulysses, Pa., his parents living in one part of the house occupied by his mother's brother, Orange Lewis. After the separation of his parents, he was taken by his father to New York and was cared for by his father's cousin, Clara Beebe Early. When his father married again, he was sent back to Ulysses, about 1853, and as his mother found it difficult to keep him, she sent him to live with his uncle, Albert Lewis, with whom he made his home during most of his boyhood. He visited his father, however, at times, and served an apprenticeship to him at the cabinetmakers trade during his residence at Hedgesville, New York.

This is taken from a much longer story written by his son, Victor L. Beebe:
Henry Harold Beebe was born at Ulysses, Pa., his parents living in one part of the house occupied by his mother's brother, Orange Lewis. After the separation of his parents, he was taken by his father to New York and was cared for by his father's cousin, Clara Beebe Early.
When his father married again, he was sent back to Ulysses, about 1853, and as his mother found it difficult to keep him, she sent him to live with his uncle, Albert Lewis, with whom he made his home during most of his boyhood. He visited his father, however, at times, and served an apprenticeship to him at the cabinetmakers trade during his residence at Hedgesville, New York.

In the summer of 1870 he worked on a new house being built by Pliny Harris, and here he met Pliny Harris's daughter, Emma, whom he married in 1871. (the story then describes their various residences, problems earning a living, and eventual estrangement from his wife). His favorite work was the making of doors and furniture by hand, building cupboards, house finishing and the like. He had a natural gift for music, but no musical education, he was a good singer and played the accordion, occasionally furnishing music for a country dance. He was a total abstainer from alcoholic drinks and from tobacco.

Many of the people in the family have a copy, and it is also available at the Potter County Historical Society in Coudersport, PA. If Jeanne doesn't have a copy, let me know and I will copy it and send her one. Victor L. Beebe also wrote The History of Potter County, Pennsylvania which is available at most Pennsylvania libraries.

A ROULETTE MAN
ENDS OWN LIFE Uses Revolver & Sends Bullet Through Brain, Saturday Evening.
George Burt, better known as "Jakie" Burt, committed suicide Saturday evening at the family" home on Third street in Roulette. He planned to send other members of the family from the home and after doing so sent a bullet crashing through his brain. For years he was an employee of the Gray Chemical Company but for a long period he had been physically incapacitated.
He leaves to mourn his loss his wife, two sons Vernon and Guy, two daughters Elizabeth and Evelyn, also , his mother.
Funeral services were held from the home Tuesday afternoon and burial was made in the Card Creek cemetery.

MEET AT BROOKLAND GROVE
Office Girls club enioyed another outing and picnic supper on Saturday afternoon at Brookland grove. The girls had the use of the swimming pool and found the surroundings an ideal place for such a gathering. Genial Mr. Stone proved an efficient wood cutter and fire builder. He also made everyone present feel at home. The time was spent in various ways until 6:00 o'clock, when all sat down to the bountiful feed which was prepared by the. hostesses,

The venerable A. B. Welch, who has been in bed at his home for the past three weeks, was removed Tuesday evening to the Coudersport Hospital for treatment.
Louis Lyman, son of Mr. and Mrs. B. L. Lyman of Coudersport and Miss Jane Gray of Weedville, Pa., were united in marriage Thanksgiving Day at Athens, Pa.
The body of Potter County's first fatal hunting accident victim, Lynn Williams, 29, of Jersey Shore, was returned there Sunday following an Investigation in the White Funeral ome in Galeton. Coroner P. R. Shaw of Coudersport said that death was caused by an accidental self-inflicted wound and that no inquest was necessary. Williams died almost instantly when his gun accidentally discharged as it slipped from his grasp.

Robert J. Edwards, son of Mrs. Clara Edwards of Coudersport, and Virginia Porter of Fairmont, W. Va., were recently married at Fairmont.

Much of the National Grange’s history has been groundbreaking: it was the first nationwide farm organization to give women full voice and vote, more than a half-century before the adoption of Universal Suffrage in the U.S.
In 1870, the National Grange became the first national farm organization to attempt to organize African American farmers following the Civil War.
A system of cooperative business organization was introduced by the National Grange early in its history, developing into successful national and regional farm cooperatives.
In 1876, the constitutionality of Granger Laws was affirmed by the U.S. Supreme Court. Beginning in 1916 through 1941, the National Grange secured passage of federal legislation to assist struggling farmers by strengthening their property rights and their bargaining position.
The National Grange has continued to support farm legislation, as well as multilateral trade negotiations and food aid programs to open foreign markets to U.S. farmers. Its representatives were present to advise the U.S. delegation at the founding of the United Nations in 1945. It brought European farm teenagers to live with Grange families following World War II, to learn about modern agriculture practices and the advantages of democracy. It has participated in agricultural development programs for the U.S. Peace Cops.
The organization was also instrumental in organizing rural electric cooperatives, telephone cooperatives, water service cooperatives, public utility districts, volunteer fire departments, and state police programs across the U.S.
All these measures began with support at a local level. Today, the grange maintains that voice. In Pennsylvania, it serves its members with a credit union in Harrisburg and provides health insurance to groups such as farmers. At one time, farmers could only insure their machinery through the grange.
