I first met Mr Makowski when I entered the 9th grade at Coudersport High School. I was so impressed by his energy, an energy like I had never seen in a teacher. He was so animated inspiring me to do my best at pronouncing the French language and he brought Shakespeare to life in my English literature classes. But it was when Mr Makowski took an added interest in me as a budding musician that he went far beyond his job description. My little Beatles-Rock band was not welcome in the music department, but Mr Makowski got us into the music room to rehearse. He recorded us every Saturday morning and took the reel to reel tapes to the local WFRM radio station to be played later in the day.
Mr Makowski even took me to Olean, NY and purchased sheet music for me. He then set up a performance for my band after a basketball game in February 1965. His only request was that we play the song, "Tammy". When we played "Tammy" we dedicated it to Mr Makowski. I had never had a teacher before or since, with such a loving caring heart as Mr Makowski.
He once scolded me to tears when my grades started to slip, much as a father would do. I can still hear his voice telling me "self discipline Larry. You need self discipline"
I wanted to get in touch with Mr Makowski all these years. I wanted to tell him of my career in the music business as a songwriter and arranger. I recently posted on Facebook on a site where I hoped someone would know where Mr Makowski might be. I was so deeply saddened with a link to this obituary was the answer to my question.
I extend my deepest, most sincere condolences to the family of Mr Makowski. I know all who knew him were most fortunate indeed. Rest In Heavenly Peace Mr Makowski.

I am so deeply saddened to find this obituary for Mr Makowski. I only knew Mr Makowski during my Freshman year of high school in Coudersport, PA (1964-1965). Mr Makowski was my English (Shakespeare) and French teacher. When he discovered that I was trying to play music with my guitar and two friends, Mr Makowski took me and my little band under his wing, getting us access to the music room for rehearsals, recording us and taking the recordings to the local WFRM radio station and taking us to Olean, NY and bought us sheet music. Mr Makowski arranged for my little band to perform in the gymnasium, after a Falcons basketball game in February of 1965. At Mr Makowski's request, in addition to our Beatles song repertoire, was that we perform a favorite song of his, "Tammy" which we dedicated to him.
After the end of the school year Mr Makowski accepted a job at Alliance College and I never saw him again.
I hoped that one day I could thank him in person for going so far above and beyond his job as a teacher, and to let him know that years later I found a career in music and had my first hit song on the radio in 1979, "I Just Fall In Love Again" by Anne Murray. I am so deeply grateful for Mr Makowski's caring soul.
I offer my sincere condolences to his family.
Rest in peace my dear teacher and mentor

John was a special and dear friend. With three boys in high school at the same time, we spent a lot of time with him. But our best times, were the years after. I sang with John in St. Mary's Choir and whenever we came back to Paw Paw in the summer, even after choir, we always had wonderful conversations and renewal of our friendship. John was a dear, dear, kind man who was always sensitive to your feeling and always had a kind and loving word for everyone. We haven't been back for a few years, the long trips are too much for Ray, but I always remembered John and the heartfelt converstions we had. He was special and greatly loved by so many. Rest in peace dear friend and our love and hearts are with Jane and your family.

Mr. Makowski was a favorite teacher in the Paw Paw school system for several generations of students, and taught Social Studies and History with a brilliant mind and a sharp sense of humor. He loved to remind us that he was Polish, and having come from Poland himself, he often helped my second-generation Polish grandmother (Lassie Hackenberg) write and interpret letters to and from contacts she had in Poland. It was a pleasure running into he and Jane as an adult, he always had a kind word and a warmth that perhaps wasn't always on display in a room full of rowdy 16-year-olds! A wonderful man who will be missed by many. Dzi?kuj? bardzo!
