	20181213Chesterfield- Larry Johnson Potter/McKean County, Pennsylvania Genealogy Yesterday at 1:56 PM 12 December 2018 Here's a bit of Dingman/Lyman early Potter County history: War of 1812 veteran Notes for John Dingman: John Dingman and his wife Hannah Turner Dingman, Nathan Turner and his wife, with their respective families ,and Abram Dingman came to Potter County, Pennsylvania from Chenango County, New York in March of 1816. As they began to climb the Allegheny range from Pine Creek side, they encountered such heavy snow that the horses could not make the summit with their wagons. After a consultation, it was determined that Nathan Turner and his wife should remain with the wagons, and the rest of the party should take their three horses and endeavor to reach the settlement on the Allegheny river. Johns wife Hannah rode one of the horses, and the two nearly grown-up daughters riding boy fashion, started with the other horses. Under great fatigue, labor and anxiety, darkness came upon them, and the mountain was still rising before them, for fear of losing their way, there was no alternative left them but remain on the mountain-side in deep snow for the night. Fortunately, one of the party had an old Revolutionary musket, and after several attempts in firing powder into a dry tree, they were rejoiced by seeing a small spark of fire kindle. The men and boys gathered dry branches of fallen trees and made a large fire, and there by saved the entire party from freezing. The next morning, news reached the young settlement at Lymansville of the deplorable condition of John Dingman's party, and John Lyman and Jacob Vanatter at once started out with fresh teams and sleighs to hunt up the snow-bound pioneers. They were found and all brought to Major Lyman's, where they were most kindly cared for. These new comers built a small house, they remained there but a short time, and then went into possession of a farm in Roulette, were both families lived for many years. Soon after they were located, the father and mother of John Dingman came. Those early settlers, like most of the others, came with their own teams, and weeks were numbered making the trip. They followed the Hudson river down to Albany and thence came by the well known Catskill Pike, through Chenango and Courtland and Steuben counties, and finally landed in to the wild woods of Potter County, Pennsylvania. There is much available about settlers coming to McKean and Potter at Cornell University with some of it online. To enlighten one to the degree of difficulty the trip for the Dingman's was, consider that many families chose and often failed, to do it in the summer using oxen to haul their belongings. Their two largest obstacles in getting to the McKean-Potter wilderness was described as being often too difficult for the beast to haul their goods through the dense forests and up steep hills. Their worst fear was not Indians but rather mountain lions stalking or lying in the limbs above waiting to attack the ox. The Dingman clan did this during the winter. Miraculous to say the least that they made it. 4Like · Reply · 23h Grace Titus I have a treasure that came with those who came in abt 1832 following those ox carts, 3 generations of Maxsons afoot.......the future wife of that 9 yr old boy distracted a mountain lion who was stalking her sister until Samuel Barber (her father) shot it. History book) about my Brock g.g.grandparents, who arrived in 1840. They came with a wagon pulled by oxen, taking 6 weeks to come from Grafton NY. They built a cabin, which at first had no door, just a blanket nailed up over the opening. My g.grandma, Amy Ellsworth Brock, kept her chicken coops on the roof, and one night when the men were away hunting, she heard a noise, & thinking it was a raccoon after the chickens, took her broom to chase it away. But it was a huge mountain lion & she smacked it with the broom & it ran off ! Imagine her being there alone with several small children & no door on the cabin !(my g.grandma Mary was only 6 weeks old when they made the trip to Potter Co. !) 	[Francis Brock Descendants pVella.FTW] "A History of Potter County, PA" by Almeron Nelson, 1875 (quoted by Patty Vella- cf. ref, May 2001)- John Dingman and wife (Hannah Turner Dingman), Nathan Turner and wife, with their respective families, and Abram Dingman came to this county (Potter Co., PA) from Chenango Co., NY March 1, 1816. As they began to climb the Allegheny range from the Pine Creek side, they encountered such deep snows that the horses could not make the summit with their wagons. After a consultation, it was determined that Nathan Turner and his wife should remain with the wagons, and the rest of the party should take their three horses and endeavor to reach the settlement on the Allegheny river. Mrs. Dingman rode one of the horses, and the two nearly grown-up girls, boy fashion, started with the other horses. After great fatigue, labor and anxiety, darkness came upon them, and the mountain was still rising before them. For fear of losing their way, there was no alternative left them but to remain on that mountain-side, in deep snows, for the night. Fortunately, one of the party had an old Revolutionary musket, and after several attempts in firing powder into a dry tree, they were rejoiced by seeing a small spark of fire kindle. The men and boys gathered dry branches of fallen trees, made a large fire, and thereby saved the entire party from freezing. The next morning, news reached the young settlement at Lymansville of the deplorable condition of John Dingman's party, and John Lyman and Jacob Vanatter at once started out with fresh teams and sleighs to hunt up the snow-bound pioneers. They were found and all brought to Major Lyman's, where they were most kindly cared for. This was help in time of need, and it was cheerfully rendered. These newcomers built a small house, and resided on the farm now occupied by Justus Mehring. John Dingman is now 87 years of age, and resides most of the time in Coudersport, PA. Thomas Bellows and John Taggart, supervisors of Eulalia, who replaced Leonard Taggart and Israel Merrick, the supervisors for 1821;
Cephas Nelson and Aim on Woodcock,, for chopping a road from Cold brook to the Cowanesque;
P. Murphy and Isaac Merrick, for transporting books;
David Smith, for making road;
Reuben Scott, for office rent;
Hiram Sizer, Brewster Freeman and Nathan Turner, for making roads, in Eulalia township;

Turn your thoughts to 1840, when our other grandfather and grandmother and family (Isaac and Amy Ellsworth Brock), came to Hebron. Can you young people visualize the trip? A yoke of oxen, and six weeks on the road from Grafton, NY to Hebron, Potter Co, PA-- a day's trip, or a little more, with your automobile. Imagine them reaching here and choosing a spot, cutting down trees, and clearing a space large enough, at first, to build a log cabin. Then the real struggle began, to keep the wolf from the door in more than one sense of the word. I've listened to my mother tell how, as a child, she had sat on the door-step and listened to the howling of the wolves close by. The future can never bring anything to us that we should be more proud of than our brave old ancestors, "heroes and heroines."
Mother dear (Mary Angeline Brock Dingman) was only six monhs old when she made that trip. But I fancy she was as happy as any of the weary travelers. Often it was hard to find a place to stop overnight. Grandma said once, they stopped at an inn, but everything was so mysterious and queer, they were afraid to stay after resting the stock. (I think they brought a cow and a calf.) Then they started on the road again. How worn and weary they must have been before they reached Potter Co! ___________________

The resident tax- payers in 1831- 32 were George Adam, Benj. Burt (saw- mill), Elisha H. Burt (saw- mill), Silas Billings, Reuben Card, Henry DINGMAN, W. Farnham, A.T. Gault, Dailatt Harr, D.B. Ingram, Joseph Kibbe, John Lyman, Laura Lyman, Wm. Moore, Francis, Philander R. and James Reed, Peter Limner, Burrell and Isaac Lyman, Sam. Stanton, Cy. and Nathan TURNER, Asahel West, Jake Wiedrich and Geo. Weirner(WEIMER). Elisha H. Burt and Philander Reed were the assessors.

History of Potter Co., PA
The first order book of Potter county is dated January 8, 1822. David Crow received $90 for building a bridge over the Portage; John King, $3.75 for stationery; Isaac Lyman, 63 cents for postage; Thomas Hayse, "late prothonotary," $1.62; John Taggart and Isaac Lyman received several small orders for services as commissioner; Tunison Carroll for printing; John Lyman and Jacob Streeter, supervisors of roads in Roulette township; Thomas Bellows and John Taggart, supervisors of Eulalia, who replaced Leonard Taggart and Israel Merrick, the supervisors for 1821; Cephas Nelson and Aim on Woodcock,, for chopping a road from Cold brook to the Cowanesque; P. Murphy and Isaac Merrick, for transporting books; David Smith, for making road; Reuben Scott, for office rent; Hiram Sizer, Brewster Freeman and Nathan TURNER, for making roads, in Eulalia township; Lucretia Edgecomb, Sally Bellows, Otis Lyman and Laura Lyman, witnesses in the case of the State vs. Patience Lyman; Nancy Hinkle and James Ayers, witnesses in the case of the State vs. Nancy Ayers. A bridge over Fishing creek was erected in 1823; Peter Knickerbocker viewed a road to the south branch of the Sinnemahoning, a former road in that direction being opened by Nathan TURNER.

History of Potter Co., PA
Nathan Turner and family came with John Dingman and wife, Hannah (Nathan's daughter), and Abram Dingman from Chenango Co., NY to Potter Co. in 1816. Nathan was accidently shot by George Taggart, who mistook Turner for a deer, in the summer of 1834, on the old salt-works road.

Nathan Turner was accidently shot by George Taggart in the summer of 1834 on the old Salt Works road that led from the Allegheny river to the salt works. It was arranged that they were to go upon this road to make some needed repairs. Turner and another man started on ahead early in the morning with a team. Taggart followed after, with his gun in hand, as was the custom. When he neared the top of the ridge, he saw what he supposed to be a deer, fired, hastened to the spot, and, horror-stricken, saw the prostrate form of his neighbor and friend struggling in death. This sad occurrence caused great grief all over the county, both parties being well known. George Taggart mourned the occurrence to the day of his death.
