Five teenagers who were killed in a blaze that erupted early Monday morning in northern Potter County, Pennsylvania, have been identified, and the parents of three of them remain hospitalized.
The fire broke out around 3:30 a.m. Monday at 226 Slingerland Road in Genesee Township, just south of the New York state line, and about 13 miles south of Wellsville.
The house was engulfed in flames when firefighters from the Genesee Volunteer Fire Co. and multiple other departments from Pennsylvania and New York arrived on the scene, according to Pennsylvania State Police at Coudersport.
State police identified the adults as Charles and Michele Erway.
They suffered injuries while unsuccessfully trying to get the others out of the house, state police said.
The Erways were airlifted from the scene to the burn unit at Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester, where the hospital confirmed Charles and Michele are both in guarded condition.
A smoldering pile of rubble is all that's left of a home on Slingerland Road in Genesee Township, Potter County. The house burned down early Monday, April 11, 2022, killing five teenagers and seriously injuring two adults.
Potter County Coroner Kevin Dusenbury identified the victims as
- Raymond Erway, 17,
- Tristan Erway, 16, and
- Evan Erway, 14,
- Krysta Kane and
- Mikalah Roulo, both 16.
Dusenbury has ruled the deaths accidental.
The Erway teens were students in the Northern Potter School District, and Superintendent Nathan K. Jones posted a letter to the community about the tragedy on the school district's website.
"The loss of students is a difficult and challenging situation that can generate a high level of anxiety and distress among our students and staff," Jones wrote. "During this time, as the school community continues to process this tragic news and copes with grief, the district will continue to offer counseling and bereavement support services to all of our students and staff."
Krysta Kane was a student in the Scio Central School District, and Mikalah Roulo attended the Wellsville Central School District.
Due to extensive damage to the home, state police investigators are ruling the cause of the fire as undetermined.
After a thorough investigation of the fire damage, it appears there was a possible issue with a woodstove or its chimney, which may have been the cause, state police said.
Investigators did determine the blaze started in the basement of the home.

Obituary
Tristan Wayne Erway, 16, died unexpectedly on Monday, April 11, 2022. Tristan was born on April 6, 2006, to parents Charles Wayne and Michele Lynette Freeman Erway.
A tenth-grade student at Northern Potter High School, Tristan also attended Seneca Highlands Career and Technology Center for Network Systems Technology.
As a member of Headwaters FFA he received his Discovery Degree, Greenhand Degree and Chapter Farmer Degree. Tristan enjoyed attending the National FFA Conventions especially the year he was able to watch his brother Clifton receive his American Farmer Degree. He was also an active member of both the Elm Valley Harvester and the Furry Friends 4-H clubs with projects including goats, rabbits, and small animals. His Guinea Pig (cavy) project was his favorite with several awards won. Tristan enjoyed showing his animals at the Allegany and Potter County Fairs each summer and had the honor of competing at the New York State Fair receiving 1st place with his Cavy Cathathon competition many times. He was able to participate in regional, state, and national ARBA- Rabbit and Cavy shows in Greensboro, NC, Columbus, OH, and Harrisburg, PA.
As a four-year member of the Black Forest Falcon Trap Team, Tristan overcame many obstacles as a shooter. He learned to trust his equipment and his coaches and blossomed into a highly regarded team member. Tristan was a member of the Wellsville Moose Teen Club, participating in the NYS Moose Convention.
Tristan loved giving rides in his goat wagon that he designed and built at the Friendship Builder Club. He taught his team of goats to drive and pull. He was very proud of his work with them.
Tristan had a sense of humor beyond his years. He always knew how to make those around him laugh. He had the capability to reason and share his thoughts about various topics at a high level. He loved to listen audiobooks, most recently finishing a series by Caimh McDonnell. He was an avid fan of Toy Story and Anime. He could put together Lego sets faster than anyone could imagine. It was amazing to watch him work. He was an avid painter and drawer. He enjoyed spending hot summer days at his Aunt Judy’s Pond with his brothers and friends.
Tristan is survived by his parents, Charles and Michele of Genesee; a brother, Clifton Erway of Lima, OH; paternal grandparents, Wayne and Janet Erway of Genesee; maternal grandparents, Rick and Angela Freeman of Wellsville; great-grandmother, June Freeman of Andover; paternal aunts, Susan (Greg) Raylea, Marie (Steve) Ackley, and Judy (Phil) May; maternal aunts, Becky (Danielle) Freeman-Brauen and Amy (Marc) Roulo; and many great-aunts, great-uncles, cousins and friends who loved him.
Tristan reached the gates of Heaven with his brothers, Raymond and Evan Erway; as well as his cousin, Mikalah Roulo; and his friend, Krysta Kane. The family pets, including their four dogs, Daisy, Penny, Sarge, and Scooby joined them in Heaven as well. He was predeceased by his great-grandparents, Arnold and Arleta Butler of Genesee, Ron Freeman of Andover, Ray and Lou Hutchinson of Scio, and Albert Hugar, Sr. of Wellsville.
A Memorial Service for Raymond Erway, Tristan Erway, Evan Erway, and Mikalah Roulo will be held 2:00 PM, Saturday, April 23, 2022 in Darlene J. Sitler Auditorium, 745 Northern Potter Road, Ulysses, PA 16948.
Private burial will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Kinney. Arrangements are under the direction of Olney-Foust Funeral Homes & Crematory, Ulysses, PA. Online condolences may be expressed at www.olneyfoust.com.
