The fire broke out around 3:30 a.m. Monday at 226 Slingerland Road in Genesee Township, just south of the New York state line, and about 13 miles south of Wellsville. The house was engulfed in flames when firefighters from the Genesee Volunteer Fire Co. and multiple other departments from Pennsylvania and New York arrived on the scene, according to Pennsylvania State Police at Coudersport. State police identified the adults as Charles and Michele Erway. They suffered injuries while unsuccessfully trying to get the others out of the house, state police said. The Erways were airlifted from the scene to the burn unit at Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester, where the hospital confirmed Charles and Michele are both in guarded condition. A smoldering pile of rubble is all that's left of a home on Slingerland Road in Genesee Township, Potter County. The house burned down early Monday, April 11, 2022, killing five teenagers and seriously injuring two adults. Potter County Coroner Kevin Dusenbury identified the victims as - Raymond Erway, 17, - Tristan Erway, 16, and - Evan Erway, 14, - Krysta Kane and - Mikalah Roulo, both 16. Dusenbury has ruled the deaths accidental. The Erway teens were students in the Northern Potter School District, and Superintendent Nathan K. Jones posted a letter to the community about the tragedy on the school district's website. "The loss of students is a difficult and challenging situation that can generate a high level of anxiety and distress among our students and staff," Jones wrote. "During this time, as the school community continues to process this tragic news and copes with grief, the district will continue to offer counseling and bereavement support services to all of our students and staff." Krysta Kane was a student in the Scio Central School District, and Mikalah Roulo attended the Wellsville Central School District. Due to extensive damage to the home, state police investigators are ruling the cause of the fire as undetermined. After a thorough investigation of the fire damage, it appears there was a possible issue with a woodstove or its chimney, which may have been the cause, state police said.
