Elmer Dever Baxter
b. 27 February 1885 at Emporium, Cameron, PA
d. 1947 at Coudersport, Potter, PA ; Buried at Newton Cemetery, Emporium, Cameron, PA
Elmer and Josie (Josephine Newton, his wife) had a disagreement with Josephine’s parents - Joseph and Maude (Cause) Newton. Thereafter they left the Emporium area and travelled to the Detroit, Kentucky, and Cleveland OH, areas.
He married Josephine “Josie” Maud Newton, daughter of Joseph Newton and Viola Maude Couse, on 11 August 1909.
He was living with his daughter, Iola Alice (Baxter) Reed, at the time of his death.

When Josie was but two years old a tragic thing happened in the village where her family lived (probably Canada). It was an Easter weekend and, as is natural, all the children had had an over amount of sweets, leaving many of them with the usual stomachaches and were attend to by an elderly doctor. Two of her siblings - a four-year-old and a six-year-old - were among the nearly thirty sick children to whom the elderly doctor unwittingly administered the wrong medication causing their deaths.
Her married name was Baxter.
She was severely burned in 1896 at Emporium, Cameron, PA.
She married Elmer Dever Baxter, son of George Augustus Baxter and Alice Gilbert, on 11 August 1909.
Josephine was 58 when she died.

He was a Methodist.
He married Viola Maude Couse, daughter of Aaron Henry Couse and Harriett Jackson, at Sarnia, Ontario, Canada
on 30 December 1873. Witnesses to the marriage were: George Russell and J. W. Branon, both of Alvinston.
Joseph Newton was a Dry Goods Salesman in 1900 at Emporium, Cameron, PA.
Her mother - Viola Maude Couse

d. 1944 either at Niagara Falls or Emporium, Cameron, PA
Viola Maude Couse lived at Caradoc, Ontario, Canada, as child.
She was a naturalized US Citizen.
The 1900 Federal Census for Emporium (Cameron) PA states that Maude Viola Couse had been in the United States for 23 years, making the year immigrated 1877.
As remembered by Iola (Baxter) Reed, Viola’s parents came from County Cork, Ireland, when Viola was a small child.
Her married name was Newton.
She lived at Port Huron, St Clair, MI, on 30 December 1873.
She was an Episcopalian before the death of her two young children (See story under Josephine concerning her 2 sibling’s deaths). After that, she joined with her husband in the Wesleyan Methodist faith.
She married Joseph Newton, son of William Newton and Elizabeth Carpenter, on 30 December 1873 at Sarnia, Ontario, Canada. Witnesses to the marriage were:
George Russell and J. W. Branon, both of Alvinston.
Viola died in 1944 at Emporium, Cameron, PA - OR - She died in Niagara Falls while living with her daughter.
She was brought back to Emporium for burial and was layed out in Agnes' home.
