Vernon E. "Tink" George (1928 - 2013)
PORTVILLE - Vernon E. George, of 312 Prosser Road, formerly of Ceres, passed away Tuesday (Nov. 26, 2013), in the Wellsville Manor.
Born Jan. 10, 1928, in Olean, he was the son of the late James and Bessie (Gore) George. On Aug. 1, 1950, in Portville, he married the former Geneva Babb, who passed away April 17, 1996. On June 16, 2000, he married the former Joyce Stives, who survives.
He enlisted in the Army, serving with the 35th Infantry RGT, 25th Division as an MP, and received the Army of Occupation Medal as well as the World War II Victory Medal. He was employed at several garages as a mechanic, serving 17 years at the former Sullivan & Murray, as a front-end alignment technician, retiring from Cooper Industries. Over the years, he enjoyed several hobbies, such as coin collecting, hunting, fishing and reloading shells. He enjoyed spending time with his family, going to Burger King for his daily coffee and being with his friends.
Besides his wife, he is survived by five daughters, Carol Barrett, Robin (Don) Ripple, Melody (Claude) Norton, Bonnie Babcock and Rosemary (Bob) Babcock; one son, Timothy (Helen) George; stepchildren, Raymond Shoup Jr., Tina Richardson, Judy Blackmon, Gloria Howard and Daniel Weimer; one sister, Sandy Wilson; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren and nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by two brothers, Norman and Robert; three sisters, Joyce, Marlene and Jeanie; a granddaughter, Paula; and a stepdaughter, Audrey.
At Vernon's request, there will be no visitation. A memorial service will be held at a later date.
Arrangements are under the direction of the Guenther Funeral Home Inc., Portville. Interment will be in Wells Cemetery, Little Genesee.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Alzheimer's Association WNY, 2805 Wehrle Drive, Williamsville, NY 14221-7380, or to the charity of the donor's choice.
