March 15 2021 · FaceBook / Coudersport...
Cousin Connie (Russell) Wykoff recently sent a great photo that was taken in 1946 at Niagra Falls. Folks in the photo are (left to right, standing)
- Myrl Edward and Berdina A. “Birdie” (Russell) Knickerbocker,
(sitting)
- Reuben Francis "Junior" and Mayfred F. (Hackett) Russell, and
- Lorraine Jean (Mitchell) and Dale William “Bill” Russell.
Birdie and Bill were brother and sister. Junior was their first cousin.
Bill retired on Feb. 3, 1995, after serving as Potter County sheriff for 11 years. Lorraine retired after more than 20 years working for the Coudersport school cafeteria. She also served as matron of the jail. In 1946, Bill turned 18 and enlisted in the US Army. Bill served in Japan as part of the occupation at the close of World War II, and he was promoted to sergeant. Connie is their daughter.
Myrl served in the US Navy during World War II, and he took part in five invasions in the South Pacific. His twin brother Earl served in the US Navy Seebees in the European Theater of Operations.
Two of their brothers were killed in action:
- Army private Harry was killed in France in 1944 and
- Marine private Dale was killed on Okinawa in 1945.
