This is a brief biography of my grandfather, Laurence David Snyder, son of Ford and Minnie Dunn Snyder, great grandson of David R & Laura A Chase Snyder, and 2nd great grandson of Solomon & Hannah Stein Snyder.
When Laurence David Snyder was born on June 28, 1899, in Coudersport, Pennsylvania, his father, Ford, was 37 and his mother, Minnie, was 24.
He married Katherine Emaline Davey on December 24, 1919. It may have been a marriage of necessity due to the fact that Katie gave birth to their first child Margarite a couple months later in 1920. Sadly, the child died shortly after she was born.
For the first year of their marriage, the 1920 census record shows them each living in the household their parents. It's not known when they found their own home but a year later, on 9 March 1921 their second child was born, Dorothy.
By 1930 Laurence, Katie and children were living in an apartment at 804 S. Main Street. He was working as a truck driver for a milling company. A few years later, the family moved to Sweden Valley, it's been said they were living in a house owned by their son-in-law, Richard Herbstritt. Here tragedy was in store for the Snyder family.
In December 1936, while their son, Donald, was playing in the kitchen with a 12 gauge shot gun, the gun discharged, hitting his brother, Richard in the chest, killing him almost instantly. It was a dark and dismal Christmas and the year did not end without more heartbreak.
Laurence and Katie's daughter, Lucille, became deathly ill and on December 29 she too passed away. Katie was taken to a hospital to recover from her depression and Laurence was incapable of maintaining the household, leaving the task to his oldest daughter, Dorothy. In time Laurence and Katie recovered and were reunited. More problems plagued the Snyder family. Twice, their homes were lost to fire. Laurence died on January 1, 1950, at the age of 50.
'This photograph of Laurence David Snyder was probably taken next to his parents house a short distance north of route 49 at Seven Bridges, across the road from the Dunn Farm. The house is no longer there but many of his mother's, Minnie, Iris and Sweetwilliam flowers still grow along the road.'
'Laurence would have been 43 years old in the photo. The baby he's holding is his first granddaughter, Sandra L Herbstritt, daughter of his daughter, Dorothy, and Richard Herbstritt.'
'Laurence David Snyder's baptismal photo 1899'
'Laurence David Snyder, approximately 6 or 7 months.'
'Many times Laurence's name is misspelled. Invariably, every document found that shows his signature, he signed his name "Laurence Snyder"
Emeline was his wife, Katie's, middle name.'

Larry Herbstritt Mom told me that. She said they "took her off to the nuthouse" and that her dad was so overcome with grief, he couldn't function. She sounded like she resented it a bit that she had to take over the parental duties because she was the oldest.

For our Michael & Sarah Ellison Dunn descendants:
The marriage of Maude Dunn, granddaughter of Michael and Sarah, to George White:
When George White was born on June 13, 1889, in Shinglehouse, Pennsylvania, his father, Chester Monroe James, was 31 and his mother, Josephine White, was 19. He married Maude Dunn on May 31, 1911, in Buffalo, New York. He died on March 5, 1948, in Rochester, Minnesota, at the age of 58, and was buried in Friendship, New York.
When Maude Dunn was born on August 25, 1892, her father, Stanton Dunn, was 22 and her mother, Delphine, was 20. She married George White on May 31, 1911, in Buffalo, New York. They had seven children:
- Marion Loretta White (1912-2011),
- Ella Maxine White (1913-1967),
- Hugh Breadon White (1919-1998),
- Bettina Jean White (1921-1985),
- Harley Eric White (1923-1944),
- Erma J White (1926-),
- Stanley James White (1928-1929),
in 16 years.
She died on April 6, 1975, in Olympia, Washington, at the age of 82, and was buried in Friendship, New York.
It's a mystery why George was given the surname of his mother rather than his father. When Geroge was eleven years old, he was listed on the 1900 census as “Georgie White”, in contrast to all his younger siblings, Samuel James, Ralph James, Mary James, Ruth James and Orly James, George's older brother.
Considering the fact that George's parents, Chester Monroe James & Josephine White, were married 30 November 1890 and that George White was born 13 June 1889, and his older brother, Orly James, 21 March 1881, both preceding the marriage of their parents, it may be that George was given the surname of his mother because Chester Monroe James may not have been his biological father.

- Hey John,
Here's how my lineage goes on the Snyder side:
My mom - Dorothy Snyder
My grandfather - Lawrence David Snyder
My great grandfather - Ford Snyder;
My 2nd great grandfather - David Snyder; he was married to Laura Chase
My 3rd great grandfather - Solomon Snyder married to Hannah Stein
Laura Chase's parents were Johnson Chase married to Sarah Roberts
Sarah Roberts' parents were Samuel Roberts married to Elizabeth Hicks
It's the Elizabeth Hicks lineage that leads back to the Billingtons on my family tree.
I'll sort this out later today.
Do you use genealogy software?
I use FAmily Tree Maker by Ancestry.com and did the FTDNA, which I just got for my whole family, literally swabbing last night.
Thanks for your lineage, I'll lay mine out for you later.
I started with 23andMe and discovered by DNA composition, which was a bit of a surprise, with some Jewish ancestry.
That made me very curious, so I got an account with Ancestry.com to see if I could find who the Jews were in my family tree.
I'm still trying to solve that puzzle but in the process discovered way more about my ancestors than I ever imagined possible

Debbie Herbstritt Tautin I never knew Grandma Snyder was hospitalized for depression. What a terribly sad sequence of events.

Larry Herbstritt Mom told me that. She said they "took her off to the nuthouse" and that her dad was so overcome with grief, he couldn't function. She sounded like she resented it a bit that she had to take over the parental duties because she was the oldest.
