MRS. MARY F. KNECHTEL
Fifty years ago today - a half century - Emil Knechtel and Mary Finke were united in marriage in Coudersport. During all these years the couple has resided here with the exception of a time when engaged in market gardening at Buffalo. They have been splendid citizens and reared a fine family, and it is fitting that Mr. and Mrs. Knechtel, their family and friends should gather today and make merry.
Mr. Knechtel was born February 2, 1863, in Kammnitz, Bohemia, Aurstria, and came with his parents arriving in Coudersport on Easter Day 57 years ago. The trip was made to Port Allegany by rail and then there were seventeen miles of mud. Friday morning the party left Port Allegany, but it was Sunday noon before they arrived here. Today with improved roads 25 to 30 minutes is ample time for the same trip.
The Knechtel family purchased a 50- acre farm in Earl Hollow, property now owned by Berger Gustafson.
On October 4. 1884, Mr. Knechtel took as his bride Mary Finke, a school girl sweetheart, born in the same town where her husband first saw the light of day. Mrs. Knechtel was born july 14, 1866.
Seven children were born to this union, five of who are still living. They are:
Mrs. Robert Mackey,
Mrs. Edward Hirom,
Emil Knechtel, Jr.,
Joseph Knechtel and
Albert Knechtel,
all of Coudersport.
There are six grandchildren:
Evelyn, Lillian, Howard Knechtel,
Mary Hirom,
Robert Knechtel and
Herbert Mackey.
The Enterprise trusts this fine couple may be spared to each other and to their children and grandchildren for many years.
