A Durand Courier extra gives us the appended amount of the murder of Titus Hoyt, of Maxville, Pepin County. The Carroll's were arrested and brought before Justice Stone of Maxville for examination on Tuesday, but the examination, was postponed to Friday the 20th.
The town of Maxville, Buffalo County, was the scene of a horrible and brutal murder Monday last. The particulars of the affair, as near as we can ascertain them, are as follows: Titus Hoyt, who resides on the bluff about three miles south of Durand, had let some of his land to Rhoda Carroll on shares. There had been some dispute about the division of the crop, and Monday forenoon Carroll and his two oldest boys, Robert and John took several teams and went to Hoyt's place for the purpose of taking what they claimed as their share of the crops. Mrs. Hoyt sent after Titus and his father-in-law Mr. Clark, who came from the woods and forbid Carroll from taking anything from the premises. After some quarrelling Rhoda slapped Titus' face and they had a short "rough and tumble" but no one was hurt and Clark and Mr. John Johnson separated the. A few minutes afterward, they had another tussle with about the same result. Rhoda, Hoyt and Clark then stood talking matters over when Clark heard something drop and turning around saw Hoyt on the ground the two Carroll boys standing over him with pitchforks. Hoyt tried to get up but could not do it. Clark asked "which one of them hit you Tito?" and Hoyt said, "Both of them" and then the boys exclaimed, "Yes, we fixed him." Hoyt never spoke afterwards. He was placed on a sled and taken to the house where he lingered in an unconscious condition until 9 o'clock when he died. Hoyt was a quiet hardworking young many about 30 years old. He leaves a wife and several small children in straightened circumstances.
