• JOHN E. FREEMAN
John E. Freeman was born on Fox Hill, near Ulysses, April 23, 1849, a son of the late Rufus and Hanna Bell Freeman, early pioneer settlers of Potter County. Mr. Freeman was the last of a family of twelve children. His mother passed away when he was only three years of age, and his father died when he was only eight. Until the Civil War, in 1861, he lived with his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Luman Bell, on the farm now known as the Mosch farm, near Sweden. When nineteen years of age, he purchased land adjoining his grandfather's farm. Here he cleared the land and built a small comfortable home. On July 3, 1871, he was married to Miss Emma Roberts, who preceded him in death in 1917. To this union five children were born:
Charles E., who passed away a year ago;
Grace L. Yentzer of Roulette;
William A., of Friendship, N. Y.;
Otto J. and Milo S. Freeman of Coudersport.
Mr. Freeman lived an active life, on the farm he had cleared when a young man, and on an adjoining farm. Some years after the death of his wife, he was again married to Sarah Kelso of Jamestown, N.Y., who survives, and has been a very kind and devoted wife during his declining years. On account of failing health Mr. and Mrs. Freeman moved to Ross street in this place a few years ago, where he passed quietly away on Monday morning at five o'clock. Funeral services were held yesterday afternoon at 2 o'clock, at the Sweden Valley Methodist Church, and the remains were placed in the Eulalia Cemetery vault. Later he will be laid to rest on Sweden Hill.
During his lifetime, Mr. Freeman enjoyed the friendship of many and was always glad to welcome them to his home. Their many kindnesses will linger long in the memory of his family..
