Morris W. Oviatt, 77, of Coudersport, died Friday (January 4, 2008) at the Bradford Regional Medical Center in Bradford.
Born on September 13, 1930 in East Smethport, he was the son of George and Cecile Angeline Burdick Oviatt. On June 20, 1953 in Smethport he married Dona Daugherty who survives.
Mo graduated from Smethport High School in 1948 and from Slippery Rock University with a degree in Health and Physical Education.
He was a veteran of the Korean War having served for five years with the U. S. Navy.
Mo received a masters degree in Health and Physical Education from Penn State University.
He taught school in Indiana, PA, Coudersport, and Port Allegany, retiring in 1985. He was basketball coach in Coudersport from 1959-1967 and took the team to the state Class C finals in 1964.
He also spent about 10 years as a basketball referee.
In 1976 Mo helped found the Coudersport Volunteer Ambulance Association where he served as president and taught many EMT classes for about 20 years while serving as an EMT in the association.
He participated in the Meals-on-Wheels program for the past 22 years.
He served 3 three year terms on the Cole Hospital Board of Directors and was currently on the Hospital Authority.
Mo was an active member of the Coudersport Golf Club and served two terms as president in the 1980s.
He was also a member of Park United Methodist Church. Mo was an AVID Penn State fan and enjoyed going to Penn State football games.
Mo is survived by his wife, Dona, of Coudersport;
three daughters,
- Pam (Tim) McCune of Youngwood,
- Marsha (Tim) Knoster of Lewisburg, and
- Paula (Tom) Glassmire of Coudersport;
seven grandchildren,
- Rebecca and Rachel McCune,
- Kalie Maurer,
- Erikka Long,
- Megan, Kevin and Kelsey Knoster;
one great-granddaughter, Kennadie Maurer;
two brothers,
- Richard (Angie) Oviatt of Buffalo, NY,
- Raymond (Patricia) Oviatt of Ft. Pierce, FL;
and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents;
one brother, Russell Oviatt;
and one sister, Betty Oviatt Bowman.
Friends were received at the Fickinger Funeral Home in Coudersport on Sunday (January 6, 2008) from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. and on Monday at Park United Methodist Church from 10 a.m. until 11 a.m., at which time funeral and committal services were held with Reverend Tom Shatto officiating.
Burial was in Rosehill Cemetery in Smethport.
