OBITUARIES
Palmer R. Chitester
Palmer R. (Red) Chitester, 86, of Coudersport, died Tuesday (March 21, 1972) in Cole Memorial Hospital after an illness of 16 months.
Born at Brookville, Sept. 15, 1905, he was a son of Robert N. and Lulu Switzer Chitester. On Dec. 31, 1936 in Bradford, he was married to the former Ellen Louise Huffman, who survives.
Mr. Chitester, a former resident of Bradford, had lived in Coudersport for the past 30 years. He had been employed as a lineman for the Bell Telephone Co. of Pennsylvania, retiring in 1970.
He was a member of Christ Episcopal Church; a life member of the IOOF Lodge of Bradford; and was a member of Telephone Pioneers of America. An Army veteran, he was a member of Potter Post 192, American Legion. Mr. Chitester was active in county politics and served as Republican county chairman for a number of years.
Besides his wife, survivors include
three sons,
- Robert J. Chitester, Edinboro,
- Thomas R. Chitester and
- Gerald J. Chitester, both of Coudersport;
seven grandchildren;
three brothers,
- Howard Chitester and
- Stanley Chitester, both of Brookville, and
- Leonard Chitester, New Cumberland;
three sisters,
- Mrs. Clair (Eleanor) Johns, Bradford,
- Mrs. Mildred Michaels, Brookville, and
- Mrs. William (Velma) Rhoades, Erie;
and several nieces and nephews.
Mr. Chitester willed his body to the Humanity Gifts Registry (formerly the Anatomical Board) of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania for studies in the furtherance of medical research at the Hershey Medical Center, Hershey.
Memorial services were held Saturday at 2:00 p.m. at Christ Episcopal Church with the Rev. Donald H. Feick, rector, officiating.
The family has requested memorials be made to the Potter County Chapter of the American Cancer Society or to a charity of the donor's choice. Arrangements were under the direction of the Grabe-Fickinger Funeral Home.
Mrs. Roddie Duell Sr.
Mrs. Emma Hannah Duell, 82, of Mills died Thursday (Mar. 23, 1972) at her home.
Born Mar. 31, 1889 at Cameron Mills, N.Y., she was a daughter of John and Josephine Rumey Harvey. She had lived most of her life in the Austin area before moving to Mills. She was married to Roddie Duell, who survives.
Mrs. Duell was a member of the Westfield United Methodist Church, the Lillian Rebekah Lodge, and the Sylvester Grange of Westfield. Also surviving are
two sons,
- Howard, at home and
- Roddie Duell Jr. of Whitesville, N.Y.;
four daughters,
- Mrs. Dorothy Haskins of Wellsville, N.Y.;
- Mrs. Stella Mayer and
- Mrs. Erma Easton, both of North Bingham, and
- Mrs. Rodelia Webster of Mills;
22 grandchildren, several greatgrandchildren and several great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Sunday (Mar. 26) at the Watkins Funeral Home, Westfield, with the Rev. Clair Stratham, pastor of the Hammondsport, N.Y. United Methodist Church officiating.
