18-Year-Old Coudersport Youth Dies Following Long Illness
Following a lengthy illness, Thomas R. Smith, 18, of Coudersport died Monday (Apri 21, 1969) at Charles Cole Memorial Hospital.
The son of Robert H. and Dorothy Dubots Smith was born July 26, in Coudersport. He was a member of St. Elualia's Church.
In addition to his parents, he is survived by a sister, Cheryl Robin at home, maternal grandmother, Mrs. John (Helen) Brown of Germania, and paternal grandmother, Mrs. Viola Froebel of Port Allegany.
Friends may call at the Grabe-Fickinger Funeral Home. The Rosary will be recited at the funeral home today (Wednesday) at 8:00 p,m. A prayer service will be held at the funeral home at 9:30 a. m, Thursday, April 24, followed by a requiem high mass at St. Eulalia's Church at 10:00 a.m. The Rev. Robert Griffin, pastor, will be celebrant.
- Interment will be in St. Eulalia's Cemet ery.

Mrs. Adella Beckwith
Native Of Coneville Dies Following Lengthy Illness
Mrs. Adella P, Beckwith of Honeoye, died Friday (April 18, 1969) in Olean General Hospital following a lengthy illness. Mrs. Beckwith was born in Coneville. She married Leonard Beckwith in 1922. He preceded her in death in 1943. She is survived by two nephews:
- Virgil Stebbins, Shinglehouse and
- Fay Stebbins of Corning, N.Y.
A funeral service was held Monday, April 21, and
- interment was in East Sharon Cemetery.
Eli R.Bartoo
Teacher At Trainable School Dies Suddenly At Hospital
Eli R. Bartoo, 86, of Ulysses died suddenly Saturday (April 19, 1969), at the Charles Cole Memorial Hospital. Born Jan. 17, 1883 in Potter County, he was a son of Henry S. and Clara Grover Bartoo. He was married to the former Mabel Carr, Aug. 28, 1907 'at Harrison Valley. Mr. Bartoo Received his bachelor of science degree from Alfred University and studied post-graduate work at Cornell University. He taught agriculture in New York State schools for 29 years until he moved to Ulysses from Catskill, N.Y. in 19S3. At the time of his death, he was teaching manual arts in Potter County Trainable School at Ulysses. Mr. Bartoo was a member of Ulysses United Methodist Church, Ulysses Grange, and was founder and past president of Ulysses Area Improvement Association. He was a former mayor of the Borough of Ulysses.
Surviving besides his widow are
- a daughter, Miss Beatrice B. Bartoo of Kenmore, N.Y.;
- a son, V. Sterling Bartoo of Summerville, N.J.;
- one brother, Graver C. Bartoo of Kalamazoo, Mich.;
four sisters,
- Mrs, Mabel Holbert of Genesee;
- Mrs. Myrtle Hamilton and
- Mrs. Laura Hamilton both of Ulysses,
- Mrs. Lera Jones of Addison, N.Y.:
three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
A funeral service will be held today, April 23, at 2:0Q p.m. at Koch and Kear- Funeral Home. The Rev. Faith Orth, pastor of his church will officiate.
- Interment will be in Mills Cemetery.

Retired Tannery Worker Found Dead; Apparent Heart Attack
Monroe M Carpenter 66, of Ulysses stricken while fishing along a stream near Loucks Mills, died from an apparent heart attack Friday (April 18, 1969). He was found lying in tne stream by passers-by.
Mr. Carpenter had been ill for several years.
The son of Marion and Ruth Barker Carpenter, he was born at Bingham, Aug. 30, 1902. He was married to the former Gertrude Mitchell July 10, 1926, at Whitesville, N.Y. Mr. Carpenter was a retired tannery worker.
Surviving besides his: wife, are four sons,
- Leonard of Ulysses,
- Robert and Douglas, both of Rochester,
- James of Elsmere, Del.;
five daughters,
- Mrs. Neva Hardie of Savannah, Ga.,
- Mrs. Norma Cobb of Coudersport,
- Mrs. Beverly Lehman of Ulysses,
- Miss Bonita Carpenter of Olean, and
- Mrs. Laura Nelson of Genesee;
two brothers,
- George B. and Lowell S. Carpenter of Ulysses;
24 grandchidren; two great-grandehldreni' and several nieces and nephews.
A funeral service was held Tuesday, April 22 from Koch and Kear Funeral Home. The Rev. Claybourne Phillips, pastor of Ulysses First Baptist Church, officiated.
- Interment was in Ulysses Cemetery.
William Hemphill Sr.
Lifetime Coudersport Resident , Dies In Georgia
Following an illness of nine months, William R. Hemphill Sr., 66, ol Savannah, GA., died in that city Wednesday (April 16, 1989). Mr. Hemphill had been a lifetime resident of Coudersport until moving to Savannah because of poor health.
Born in Hebron Twp., July 25, 1902, he was a son of Walter V. and Cora Carmer Hemphill. He married the former Dorothy M. Wood, Dec. 30, 1921. He was a retired farmer and oil well driller in this area.
Mr, Hemphill was a former Eulalia Township supervisor for many years. He attended the Seventh Day Baptist Church of Hebron Center.
Surviving in addition to his widow, are two sons,
- William Jr., of Coudersport,
- Paul S- of Allegany, N.Y.;
- a daughter, Mrs. William (Donna Mae) Best of Savannah;
12 grandchildren and one great-grandchild;
- a sister, Mrs. Alfred (Harriett) Dibble, of Pottstown;
a nephew and four' nieces.
A funeral service was held at the Grabe-Fickinger, Funeral Home Saturday, April. 19, at 2; 30 p.m The Rev. Rex Zwiebel,, pastor of the Alfred Station, N.Y. Seventh Day Baptist Church, ' officiated.
- Interment was in Woodland Cemetery, Coudersport.

Otto B. Nelson
Dies In Cole Memorial Hospital Ill Several Years
Ill for several years, Otto B. Nelson, 66, ol Coudersport died Sunday (April 20, 1969) in Charles Cole Memorial Hospital.
The son of Jacob and Loretta Harrison Nelson, he was born May 28, 1902 in Tioga County.- He was married to the former Vivian Herbstritt Buchanan Nov. 27, 1947, in Coudersport.
A lifelong resident of Coudersport, he had worked for the American Silver Truss Co. for the past 14 years. He was a member of the Port Allegany Lodge 460, Loyal Order of the Moose.
He is survived by his wife;
two stepchildren,
- Gordon Buchanan of Wiltiamsport and
- Mrs. Leona Zu- raw of Coudersport; three grandchildren and several cousins. A funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. today (April 23) at the Grabe-Fickinger Funeral Home. The Rev. LaRue Bender, pastor of Park United Methodist Church, will officiate.
- Interment will be in Eulalia Cemetery.

Clair B. Green
Native Of Raymond Dies Suddenly At Work lit Wellsville
Clair B. Green, 59, of RD Genesee died early Friday morning (April l8, 1969) while at work at the Worthington Co., in Wellsville, N.Y.
Mr. Green was born at Raymond, April 30, 1909, the son of Erville and Anna Belivin Green. He Was married to the former Margaret McNamara who survives.
He was a member of the South Branch Grange.
He is also survived by three brothers,
- Richard, Gerald and Fordyce, all of RD 2, Genesee,
- a half-brother, Frances Sheon of Hornell and
- a sister, Mrs. Marjorie Hemphill ot Genesee.
- A son preceded him in death. .
A funeral service was held Monday, April 21, 2:00 p.m. at Koch and Kear Funeral Home. The Rev. William Barnes, pastor of Genesee Methodist Church, officiated. Interment was in Raymond Cemetery.
