It's not my original though. It's a share that Ancestry popped up in my hints. I have Millers in my family but this is far enough out there that I'm not totally sure they are mine yet.

LAST SAD RITES
FUNERAL OF S. M. MILLER, ENGINEER WHO MET TRAGIC DEATH HELD SUNDAY
The remains of Merville Miller, the young man who was killed at Medix Run last Thursday arrived in Coudersport Friday evening and were taken in charge by Schutt & Gillon, who conducted the funeral. The body was badly disfigured. He was the engineer and when he lost control of the train he had a boy and girl riding with him. He had the girl jump and he took the boy in his arms and jumped with him. The engine turned over upon him at this time and when he was taken out from under the wreck he a and the little fellow still clasped In his arms were both dead. The brave man had tried to save both of the children. The girl was slightly burned but otherwise escaped without injury.
Besides his wife, who before her marriage was Miss Nettie Vanderhoof, the deceased is survived by two little daughters about two and five years old,
- his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Miller
and several brothers and sisters.
The funeral which was held Sunday afternoon at Andrews Settlement was largely attended.
Mr. and Mrs. Aaron Vanderhoof of Potterbrook, parents of Mrs. Miller, Mr. and Mrs. Sanderson Fox and Mrs, William Skinner, also of Potter-brook, came to Coudersport Friday and were guests of Mr, and Mrs. Dell Goodrich, going with them Sunday to Andrews Settlement to attend the funeral.
Mr. Miller was prominent in the I. O. O. F. and the remains were accompanied from Medix Run by the following lodge members who acted as pall bearers:
- Ebenezer Winslow,
- Harry Ford,
- Warren Robinson,
- August Ellison,
- D. W. Wilber and
- Thomas DeLong.
Deceased is survived by the following brothers and sisters:
- Mrs. Charles Neefe, of Sweden;
- Mrs. Will Stevens, of Shingle House;
- Herbert of Hornell;
- Misses Edith, Laura and Emma and John and Foster of Andrews Settlement.
The following is the account of the accident given by the Associated Press:
DuBois, Pa., Nov. 6 -- A boy and girl riding in the locomotive cab with Engineer S. M. Miller met a distressing fate with him today. The train ran away on the Goodyear Company's lumber road near Medix Run and these were the casualties:
The Dead
- Engineer S. M. Miller, of Medix Run, pinned under the cab of the engine and scalded to death.
- William Green, aged 12 years, pinned under cab and crushed and scalded.
The Injured
- Lilly Green, aged 18 years; caught under the cab, but rescued, badly scalded on the head, face and body.
- Harry Cohr, arms and head scalded and fingers broken.
A number of others Injured by jumping, but not in a serious condition.
The wreck occurred on a curve at the bottom of the steep grade a short distance from Medix Run. The brakes on the train refused to work and the train got beyond control.
Most of the people knowing of the sharp curve at the bottom of the hill, jumped and escaped with slight injuries.
Lilly and William Green were riding in the cab with Engineer Miller, who urged them to jump. They refused and in the hope that he could in some way get control of his train again, the engineer stayed with his locomotive. The bodies of Miller and the Green boy were not recovered until several hours after the wreck.
Another Account
The following was contributed by a friend of the deceased.
On Thursday, Nov. 5, 1908 at one o'clock occurred the death of S. M. Miller of Medix Run, Elk County, Pa., while making a home run with twelve cars of bark and one dead engine. Miller was running his engine backwards to hold the load and as they started some way the train got the start of the men. He signalled down brakes and two (of) the men rushing to one brake, broke the chain giving all the more speed to the runaway train.
There was a woman and boy riding on the engine and the fireman and the noble engineer, Miller entreated her to jump. She absolutely refused to do so.
The fireman jumped leaving the engineer to get off the boy after attempting to stop his engine. He came on the steps with the boy in his arms and the huge engine tipped over, burying the one who said he would never leave his train as long as a woman was there needing his help, underneath its heavy weight. When about five o'clock they got him out of the bed of coals he had the boy still clasped in his arms.
Deceased leaves to mourn his sad and untimely death, a wife, two daughters, aged five and one-half years and nineteen months, father and mother, five sisters and three brothers, besides a host of relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held at Andrews Settlement church at 1 p. m. Sunday. Nov. 8, Rev. J. A. Gardner of Canaseraga N. Y., preaching the words of comfort to the bereaved ones.
- Interment in the Andrews Settlement cemetery.
Schutt & Gillon, funeral directors.
