I recently received genealogy documents compiled by one of my DNA relatives, Dave VanKerkhove. Dave is a descendant of Barbara Wortman.
Barbara Wortman was the daughter of Christian Wortman and Anna Marie Tieman.
Dave's information, combined with a recent DNA match with another "Dave", Dave Bossart, a descendant of Francis Xavier "Frank" Wortman, sheds new light on the mystery of the parentage of Mary Ann Wortman. Francis Xavier was the first son born to Christian Wortman & Anna Marie Tieman.
According to Mr VanKerkhove's records, Francis Xavier Wortman was born February 1851. His records also show that Christian Wortman and Anna Marie were married 27 August 1850. Some simple math would imply that Francis Xavier would have been conceived some time in May of 1850.
In June of 1850 Anna Marie was shown on the 1850 Federal Census Record to be married and living in the household of John Gerard Wehage and they had a 4 month old daughter named Mary Ann.
In July of 1850, John Gerard Wehage died at the age of 26, from what was described as "COLIC".
The next month, on August 27, 1850, Anna Marie married a much older man, Christian Wortman, who had been a "Laborer" on a nearby farm.
It's difficult to interpret this information any other way than, the obvious. Anna Marie Tieman Wehage, must have had an affair with Christian Wortman while still married to John Wehage. Christian can be found on that same 1850 Federal Census as being in the household of Barnabas Anthony.
To back this up even more, the aforementioned, Dave Bossart, described as a "half 3rd cousin" shares with me 171 cM of DNA on several different segments. We share 2.5% DNA which strongly suggests a full 3rd cousin relationship, not a half 3rd cousin relationship.
It is now my conclusion that Mary Ann Wortman was indeed the daughter of Christian Wortman and Anna Marie Tieman and not the daughter of John Gerard Wehage.

Another, less intriguing, possibility is that Francis Xavier Wortman was fathered by John G Wehage. This would account for my 171 cM sharing match with the aforementioned, Dave Bossart, who is a descendant of Francis Xavier “Wortman”.

ATTENTION: A scenario occurred to me that would remove much of the intrigue concerning the actions of 1850 between Anna Marie, John Garard Wehage and Christian Wortman. Perhaps Francis Xavier Wortman was given that last name in error, and he and Mary Ann were indeed the daughter and son of John Gerard Wehage and John fathered the child (Francis Xavier) in May and Anna Marie being pregnant and widowed in July when John Wehage died, Christian Wortman came to the rescue and married her right away in August.
This seems more reasonable and puts everyone in a much better light. This would also explain my high 171 cM DNA match with Dave Bossart, descendant of Francis Xavier Wortman

Dave VanKerkhove research for Anna Marie Tieman (Treman) and her first husband, John Gerard Wehage.
The spelling "Vehagen" was a misunderstanding by the census taker of the pronunciation of his last name.
There is clearly some confusion about Armill Wehage and Xavier Wehage being born in the same year, unless they were twins.

DBossart44 is Dave Bossart, described here, erroneously, as my Half 3rd cousin. This is because I currently have John Gerard Wehage as my 2nd great grandfather. Once this is changed back to Christian Wortman this will change to "3rd Cousin".
