Another photo from the collection of Lillian McCullough Olmstead. It is labeled
Hattie and Minnie Walkup.
I believe their parents were Charles Walkup and Caroline Strong.
Caroline was the daughter of David Strong and his first wife Mahala Clark, and a half sister to my great grandmother Mahala Strong Olmstead. Charles and Caroline had three daughters;
- Miranda born in 1856,
- Ella born in 1858, and
- Hattie born in 1870.
Now, in this photo Hattie and Minnie look to be about the same age. I am not sure who Minnie is. Is it a nickname for Miranda? But Miranda and Hattie are 12 years apart in age.
The 1870 census has
Minnie as 13 y.o.,
Ella as 12 y.o., and
Hattie as 4 months old.
So, Minnie is Miranda.
The 1880 census has
- Hattie as 10 and her sister
- Minnie as 23.
They are the only 2 children listed with their parents.
Ella, who would be 22 is not listed, assume she is married.
- Yes, she married in 1880 and is listed with her husband F.J. Eddy.
Hmmm, no way are the two girls in this photo 12-13 years apart.
Four hours of investigation later, I think the girls are Miranda, aka Minnie, and Ella. And when the photo was labeled many years later, probably by Lillian McCullough Olmstead, she got the names confused so rather than being Hattie and Minnie, they are Minnie and Ella.

I'm noticing that the young lady on th left is seated but with the flurry of fabric its not so noticeable. That's what make the two girls appear the same size. Lovely pic!!
