... the guy who purchased the company from the Lincoln family, lived in our old house on S. Main St. from 1974 to 1991. Earl Bliss was an engineer from that large tannery in Elkland.

Earl D. Bliss, 76, passed away Sunday (May 17, 2009) at St. James Mercy Hospital in Hornell, after a lengthy battle with Alzheimer Disease.
Earl was born in Troupsburg, July 19, 1932, the son of Melvin and Mildred Bliss.
He married Virginia E. Ford, June 30, 1951 at the First Baptist Church of Addison.
He was predeceased by
- their only child, Melody Rae Shupe;
- his parents; and
brothers,
- Larry D. and
- Roy N. Bliss.
Earl graduated from Troupsburg Central School in 1950.
He was an employee of the Elkland Leather Company from 1950-72, serving many of those years as an assistant to the superintendent.
From 1972-74 he managed a leather plant for Canada Packers Ltd.
In 1974 Earl purchased L.H. Lincoln & Sons, Coudersport, Pa., a chemical supply house.
From 1985-95 Earl was also a consultant for Canadian Shares Investment Group and Howes Leather Corp. of Pa. In 1995 Earl became a partner of Gunnison Brothers, a leather company in Girard, Pa. His final business venture included shared operations of Pro-Masters, the only ball manufacturing company in the U.S.
Due to his extensive knowledge of the leather tanning industry, Earl was respected worldwide. He traveled as a consultant extensively to China, Southeast Asia and South America, as well as throughout the U.S. In addition he invented techniques and equipment which aided in the tanning process.
Earl is survived by
- his wife, Virginia;
- grandson, Alexander Glenn Shupe and
- son-in-law, Harry Shupe of Alpharetta, Ga.;
brothers,
- Arling (Jeannine) Bliss of Troupsburg,
- William (Dolores) Bliss of Troupsburg,
- Melvin (Rose)?Bliss of Wellsboro, Pa., and
- Alan (Kathleen) Bliss of Warsaw;
sisters,
- Betty Wheaton of Dansville,
- Audrey (Michael) Stepanian of Hornell,
- Judy (Joseph) Ridgway of Syracuse, and
- Bonnie (Dennis) Cady of Montour Falls;
sisters-in-law,
- Dorothy Bliss of Jackson, S.C., and
- Eileen Bliss of Troupsburg;
several nieces and nephews;
- and a special family friend, Luz Esther (Tety) Castellanos of Guatemala.
Calling hours will take place from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Wednesday at the H.P. Smith & Son, Inc. Funeral Home, 1607 Main St., Woodhull. A funeral service in celebration of Earl’s life will take place 11 a.m. Thursday at the Troupsburg United Methodist Church.
- Burial will be at Mt. Hope Cemetery, Troupsburg.
A time of fellowship will take place in the church dining hall immediately following the service. A Masonic Memorial Service will be conducted at 8:45 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
