METZGER-METZGER CONNECTION IN OUR FAMILY
South German and Jewish (Ashkenazic): occupational name for a butcher, Middle High German metziger, metzjer, German Metzger (probably a loan word from Latin, but of uncertain lineage).
The Metzger family name was found in the USA, the UK, Canada, and Scotland between 1840 and 1920. The most Metzger families were found in the USA in 1880. In 1840 there were 43 Metzger families living in Pennsylvania. This was about 51% of all the recorded Metzger's in the USA.
We have two lines of these Pennsylvania Metzgers in our family. Are their ancestors connected? I don’t know.

Owen Goodman Metzger was the son of William Hayes Metzger and Pamilla Coolidge (English descent) and William was the son of Francis “Frank” Larue Metzger and Margaret Cook, Francis was the son of Daniel Metzger, son of John Metzger and Anna Marie Larue. I think John’s parents were from Germany. There’s been a lot of nonGerman intermarriage

Larry Herbstritt I think John Metzger himself was from Germany. I never could find the ship he came on.....I assume it landed in Philadelphia.

The local draft board has been notified that no registrant of 18 to 25 was to be considered a "key man" in war industry unless his deferment was recommended by the State Director. The only way industrial workers from 18 through 25 can be deferred other than on designation by their state directors as "key men" is when they are engaged in an activity designated as deferable by Maj. Gen. Lewis B. Hershey, Selective Service Director. The new ruling follows an unprecedented March call that Saturday took 290 from Potter County to Erie for the pre-induction medical examination. According to an unofficial tabulation made by the Enterprise, more than 200 were found to be physically fit for military duty a much higher percentage than average. Rejections have been running close to 50. Official figures have not been disclosed. One of the men accepted Saturday was so eager to get on with his military career that he left immediately for induction without first notifying his wife. Hundreds of wives and children milled about in Coudersport Saturday night and early Sunday morn-ing waiting for the men to return, Late getting started Saturday morning they arrived about 3:30 Sunday morning.

Elliott Elected Council President
Coudersport's new borough council, meeting Monday night in the hose rooms for organization, rehired Robert T. Grabe as borough treasurer but tabled the resignation of John W. Mahaley, secretary-solicitor, until tomorrow night, pending further investigation. Mr. Mahaley had indicated he would accept the job again if his salary were increased about $1,000 per year.
Carl H. Roberts, Charles Upde-graff and John Karr were sworn in by burgess Mort. W. Levinson, who conducted the meeting prior to the election of James L. Elliott as president for the next two years. Mr. Elliott was in charge of the balance of the meeting which lasted from 8:00 o'clock until about 10:30.
Mr. Grabe, who. for years has served as trustee of the Schildeberger Estate as well as borough treasurer, will receive the same salary for the latter position $125 per year. He reluctantly agreed to continue as trustee of the estate after he had been assured that the borough will attempt to dispose of the two houses owned by the estate during this year.
Street commissioner Oliver Watson was re-appointed by the new council at the same salary, although he had requested an increase for himself and other borough street employes. Council members asked for time to study the budget before any salary or wage increases are granted.
It was also decided by the newly-organized borough governing body that regular meetings will be held the first Monday of each month at 7:30 in the hose rooms.
Committees named by Mr. Elliott include the following:
Street Mr. Karr, chairman; Mr. Updegraff, Mr. Watson and Tom Leete.
Lighting Owen E. Metzger, chairman; Mr. Roberts.
Safety Mr. Leete, chairman; Mr. Metzger and the borough's two police officers, Paul Hughes and Earl B. Smith.
Fire Mr. Updegraff, chairman; fire chief Arthur Nelson and Theodore Williams, assistant chief.
Borough sewers - Mr. Roberts, chairman; Mr. Karr, Mr. Metzger and Mr. Watson.
Library - Morton Lilly and Mrs. H. A. Dorfeld. (Note: The library board consists of seven members two appointed by the council, two by the school district and three elected at large).
