Eugenie Carhartt Davis, 79, Damariscotta, died Wed., Dec. 22, at home, from Alzheimer's disease.
She was born in Detroit, Mich., a daughter of Henry Herbert Yates and Gretchen Lincoln (Stearns) Yates. Her mother later married Wylie Welling Carhartt who adopted Eugenie and her sister Patricia. Her mother was killed in an auto accident, leaving Eugenie to care for her two younger sisters and her step-father.
She studied art at the Parsons Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris in 1929, which was the beginning of her lifelong career in art.
She married David Marshall Whitney, Jr. in 1993, was divorced in 1938 (?), and married Carroll Trowbridge Cooney, Jr. of Waldoboro.
During World War II she volunteered as an ambulance driver for the local Red Cross. She also illustrated "A Green Field for Courage" and "David", children's books written by Cooney. They were dovorced in 1947, and she moved to Exeter, NH with her four children.

On April 10, 1953, she married Leverett Brainard Davis in Newcastle. In 1960, she had her first one-person show at the Farnsworth Mseum in Rockland. Every painting in her show sold, including "Winter Scene" purchased by the Farnsworth for its permanent collection. Mrs. Davis continued to paint and care for her large family, enjoying nearly 40 summers on Harbor Island, Friendship.

She is survived by her husband, Leverett B. Davis; two sisters, Patricia Howard of Newcastle and Gretchen Valade of Grosse Pointe Farms, Mich; one brother, Wynn Yates of Charlotte, NC; five children,

- Quita Palmer of Haslemere, England;
19 grandchildren; and one great-granchild.
