SCHUETZEN CLUB (Schuetzenverein)
When I discovered this collection of photos, I wanted to write something about them, but quite frankly, I have little to say other than some of our Mosch and Kortz family members participated in activities at the Schuetzen Club.
From what I understand, the Schuetzen Club was not unique to Germania. This was a traditional German marksmanship club, organized in other communities across the country where German settlers immigrated. From a book called “Historical Sketches of Potter County” The Germania Schuetzen Club or Verein was organized in 1894 with the leading spirit of Dr Charles Meine. A park was cleared to the rear of the club house and outdoor bowing alleys were built. The club had a lunch counter, but the biggest feature was that officialdom granted a special dispensation whereby the club could be open Sunday. Beer was not sold, but Germania got beer by the simple expedience of having each member pay 25 cents as an attendance fee. A later president of the club was Otto Braun who was instrumental in starting the Fourth of July hillclimbs which became a tradition along with the Sunday night club dances which drew large crowds from surrounding towns. The Schwarzenbach Brewery petitioned the court and was given permission to sell beer by the gallon during a period when the rest of the area was dry. A side note, mentioned in the book, indicated that Germania had two bands, the Schoendorfer (Frank Schoendorfer was married to Anna Mosch) and the Schwarzenbach, performed on many occasions. Dancing was always important as were picnics and suppers.
Members of our families are listed in the club membership photo: 2. John Welfling, 19. Carl Mosch Jr, 21. Emil Mosch, 35. Carl Mosch Sr., 37. Emil Weber, 39. Herman Mosch & 54. Charles Welfling.
Margery Ann Mosch wrote in her “Mosch Family History”:
"Something should be said here concerning the Schuetzen Club (Shooting Club) at Germania. It was there that the Mosch Boys gathered most of the trophies in the competitive shooting and bowling events, and where the social life of the community centered. The sports enjoyed there are still dominant factors in our family life. Never were there such hunters or fishermen as the Mosch line produced. It is common knowledge that the largest deer and the longest trout were caught and shot by them. Their annual Schuetzen Verein has become a tradition in this Northern Pennsylvania region." One of those Mosch “shooters” was Christian Robert Mosch as pictured.

I participated in one several times as a guest in the 1980's-90's at one in Sandhofen, near our chemical plant in Mannheim, Germany, in particular the Kegeln (sort of bowling), with associated kitchen for beer and bar food- not nearly the scale of this, but an interesting hold-over. Great post, Paul Lynn Gardner!
