Kirby L. Ordiway, age 62, passed away on October 4, 2019, in Austin, Texas from cancer.
A native of Clarion, he had lived in Austin since 1981.
He is predeceased by his parents, Verle and Lillian Ordiway of Clarion,
and is survived by his siblings:
- Kay Ordiway Clark (Frank) of Lake Mary, FL;
- Trace Ordiway (Lori) of Dallas, TX; and
- Holly Ordiway and Clark Ordiway of Clarion.
Kirby also had a core group of friends in Austin who mourn his passing. The family especially recognizes and thanks Kirby’s best friend, Tim Abbott, who has been a huge help in taking care of Kirb’s final affairs.
Kirby was an accountant with the Internal Revenue Service for over 30 years. His supervisor there said that he never missed a day of work, that he was beloved by his co-workers, and that his work ethic and dedication to service were an inspiration.
He lived a solitary life and eschewed anything fancy.
Highly intelligent, and with a wry sense of humor, Kirby had a myriad of interests and hobbies, including vintage radio shows from the 1930s and 40s, books, movie serials, the Thunderbirds TV series, world economic affairs, NRBQ, anime, and music. At the time of his death, he had well over 1,000 record albums on vinyl and CD, including an impressive collection of jazz, classical, and original cast recordings. Throughout his life, he remained a fan of the Pittsburgh Steelers and Straub beer.
Kirby embodied the spirit of generosity. After his father died, he financially assisted his mother until she passed away. And he helped out his siblings whenever they were in need. He was an equally generous uncle to his niece and nephews. He wanted no praise for his acts of generosity (other than a short thank-you note!).
Kirb also sympathized with the homeless and indigent people he met on the street and gave them money individually. The family asks that any memorial contributions be made to organizations that provide for the homeless population, including https://www.caritasofaustin.org/ and https://www.frontsteps.org/. Also, the City of Austin has numerous offices and agencies devoted to helping the homeless. Many of these accept donations.
A celebration of Kirby’s life will be held at the High Road on Dawson, 700 Dawson Rd, Austin, TX, on Saturday, November 9, 2019, from 5-8 pm. Friends, co-workers, family, and friends of the family are invited to attend.
In sum, Kirb was a humble, good guy who left us too soon. He will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.
