VOL. XXXV The Cameron Co. Press, Wed Fifty Years Next week
Mr. and Mrs. J. Orvis Hemphill, highly respected Emporium residents, will observe their Golden Wedding Anniversary Wednesday, March 21.
Mrs. Hemphill, the former Mabel Halderman and Orvis were married at the home of the bride's parents on March 21, 1906 by the Rev. O. S. Metzler.
Miss Edna Palmer and Joel C. Jordan were the couple's attendants.
They later married and make their home here after Mr. Jordan's retirement.
Orvis, as he is better known to everyone, was one of the top baseball players of the area. Shortly after the marriage he left for DuBois where he played for that city's entry in the Inter-State League.
Orvis cut his ball career short and returned to Emporium where he was employed in the machine shop at the old furnace. After it closed he went to work for the Elk Tanning Co., and retired in 1946.
The Hemphill's were blessed with six children, five of whom are still living. There are
- Mrs. B. C.(Louise) Carson, Emporium;
- Fred,Waterloo, N.Y.;
- Mrs. Fred (Marian) Reid;
- Mrs.John. (Evelyn) Bobinko, Emporium, and
- John, Waukegan, Ill.
There will be a family dinner Sunday at the Cabin Kitchen in honor of the couple. It will be followed by an open house at the Hemphill's pleasant home on East Fifth Street from 2:30 p.m.on.
The Press joins with the Hemphill's family and friends in extending sincere congratulations and best wishes. The hope, too, is expressed that the couple may have many more years together.
