The Burt family is one of the oldest families in Potter County, arriving in the early 1800s. Everyone in the photograph is identified, which is rare in most similar photographs. Family member Charles Emerson Hosley built the Hosley House Hotel in Ulysses, a portion of which can be seen to the extreme right in the photo. Charles Emerson Hosley and John F. Stone built Oak Hall in Brookland. Anson Hosley, a renowned photographer currently living in Webster, NY, is the great-grandson of Anson Seth Burt.
