FIVE MEN TRY AT SHEEP SHEARING AT CONTEST HELD HERE TUESDAY
Claud Cook of Millport Carries Away Honors With 93 Points Others from Smethport, Port Allegany and Ulysses Take Part Speed Counts Less Than Quality of Work Large Number of Spectators.
There was a goodly crowd of spectators at the yards of the Coudersport Live Stock Market Tuesday afternoon to witness the sheep shearing contest staged there in which five men took part.
Not all of those who were present were sheep men but were growers present from Cameron, Tioga, McKean and Potter Counties, and there is no question but the contest was profitable to all of them.
The score card used for each en-' trant quickly dispelled the idea that speed is the only requisite for taking the fleece from a sheep.
The points in judging were:
- Quality of work, 30 points.
- Handling of sheep and shears, 25.
- Number of cuts perfect, 20.
- Speed, 15.
- Condition of fleece, 10.
P. S. McKenzie, State College, judged the work. W. B. Connell, live stock extension specialist, conduct ed various demonstrations for the edification of the sheep raisers.
Ward Cook, Millport, had 93 points to his credit, in the contest. His average for shearing was seven minutes and 59 seconds.
Thomas Thome, Port Allegany, was in second place with 85 points, and average time of eight minutes and 57 seconds. Walter Kliseth, Smethport, made 84 points and his brother, Alfred Kliseth, made 72 points.
Edward Kosa, Ulysses, took nearly 20 minutes to shear a sheep and his score was only 48 points but he learned many of the kinks and next year he will make some of the contestants sit up and notice.
County Agent Straw was well pleased with this first contest and is' confident that next year's gathering will bring a bigger crowd and even greater interest.
