Glenn Dunn Named Acting Emergency Management Coordinator For Potter County
pema
Glenn Dunn has begun work as Acting Emergency Management Coordinator for Potter County.
He succeeds Jim Steiner in the full-time position, reporting to Potter County Emergency Services Director John Hetrick.
Dunn is a former fire chief and emergency responder who worked for many years as an assistant with the vocational agriculture department at Coudersport Area High School. He has also served part-time for the county’s West Nile virus control program and he is active in the Potter-Tioga Maple Producers Association.
A vote on Dunn’s hiring will be taken at the next business meeting of the Potter County Board of Commissioners. If the hiring is formally approved, the terms will be made retroactive to Aug. 3. His pay will be set by the county’s Salary Board, comprised of the three Commissioners and the County Treasurer.
The provisional appointment allows Dunn to take advantage of training opportunities prior to the board’s next business meeting. Director Hetrick noted that Dunn will be participating in an expedited training program that will lead to certification by the Pa. Emergency Management Agency. Once he is certified by PEMA, the state will pay one-half of his salary. Potter County Today

As a former student of Glenns- I hope you show more ambition at your new job than you did at your assistant teaching job.

It is obvious that this county doesn't advertise for jobs within county gov't. Great one on the commissioners part. I figure it is another way for them to fill thier personal agenda.

I don't think anyone was aware that a temp appointment was being considered. Did anyone see any advertisement?

Contrats brother, its been long time coming. There are some boneheads on here that are clueless. Enjoy it, you have put a lot of hard work and long hours in for the county over the past 25 years.

Not sure what the commissioners personal agenda but it seems to me that they keep filling positions without advertising them. It always seems to be good personal friends of thiers.

Why do we have an Emergency Management DIRECTOR AND COORDINATOR?? Glenn (or most people) could handle these positions by himself. It's not that busy an office. One of their biggest jobs is to submit the weather report to Solomon's words.

I guess they just don't know where to spend all of the 55.00 per person occ. privilege tax. Although it is funny to watch them get their panties in a bunch when a thunderstorm comes through, I'll have to agree with the posted above, why do we need a director and a coordinator?

Good personal friends how? Because they once worked at Adelphia, had a conversation with a commissioner at one time or have lived and worked here for all their lives?
I can't speak to whether some jobs have been posted or not or even if every position was required to be made public, but as far as the hirings being just loading up the county payroll with old buddies, I dont think that is a very accurate assessment.

Congrats Glenn! Job Well Done!
If anyone doesn't think there is a need for the position they obviously have no clue what really happens in today's society.. oh wait the same ones who complain that EMS and FIRE don't get there quick enough but don't bother volunteering either!
I know you can get the job done. Good Luck turning things around...

12:45 blogger who says that office isn't busy apparently has no idea what happens there on a daily basis. Not only do they handle info on hazmaterials, emergency plans for day cares, hospital, various facilities, pandemic info, fire/ems laws, financial records for which they have obtained grants for several programs in potter county (west nile virus, cert, 911, communications) they also handle the mapping and addresing of the county. Most of the staff and other volunteers are being trained on a high tech dispatching system which might allow 911 to save your ASS someday. These people are a extremely dedicated to their jobs and go above and beyond of what's required of them. Thank you to emergency services and the county for looking out for us and we wish Mr Dunn the best. He'll do a great job.

Some people obviously still need to GROW up and get a REAL job and quit being jealous of others who actually succeed in life!!

Does it really matter how a person looks in a picture? The importnat thing is that in light of the circumstances leading to the opening, the Commissioners appointed the best person for the job. It's time to let him do his job, I have no doubt that Glenn will exceed the expecations placed on him for this job. As far as the nay sayers, get over it. For the other yes I am his brother, thank you for asking. It is time to suppor him and John as they try to complete the vision they have for the county and for the furture of the emergency services and communications that most every one takes for granted. Brother good luck in this new job, it's hard to change from one career to another after doing one for so many years.

As the poster of the picture comment, may I say that it is easy to misinterpret the tone of a written comment. It was said in jest only. I apologize if it was taken wrong. As I said, Glenn will do a great job and I say that sincerely.

Congrads Glenn. I have worked with Glenn at fires and with fire training of our local depts. for years. I have found Glenn to be a great contibution to the community on the emergency end. I'm not aquainted with his school teaching abilities but I do know that when he helped teaching fire service training he was very good. I am only one person in the community and one opinion, but I believe stongely that Glenn will do a terrific job for our county. Glenn, if I can help, let me know. You desire this chance to prove to those disbievers.

Yea, that's changing things.... It's not until they feel the heat from the restless natives, that they sit up and listen.
As for the best man for the job,
Who did he beat out?
The Commissioners are going to run this county like their own private party and walk all over you until you stand up.

Sons of Dunn Farm
Nestled in the center of picturesque Potter County is the sprawling 180-acre Sons of Dunn Farm, where delicious pure maple syrup has been created for nearly three-quarters of a century.
The Dunn homestead was acquired by Gary and Maribelle Dunn in the mid 1950’s, after Gary completed his service with the Army’s 101st Airborne Division during the Korean War. Maribelle’s family produced maple throughout her childhood on land in Potter and McKean Counties.
Gary and Maribelle, with their children Doris, Gary Jr., Glenn and Bryan, managed the dairy farm until their retirement in 1994, also producing peas, potatoes and beef and maintaining an apple orchard.
The Sons of Dunn Farm is currently owned by Glenn Dunn, Sr. and his wife Joanne, and is run with the help of their children, Amber, Emily and Glenn Dunn II.
In addition to creating the finest Maple products, Sons of Dunn Farm also produces small grains and hay.
The Dunn Family has a history in service organizations, including the Future Farmers of America (FFA). Gary Dunn was an Honorary Keystone Degree recipient on two occasions, in recognition of his dedication to agriculture education and the FFA program.
In the 1950’s and 60’s, Gary and neighbor Gene Axlline helped Santa as he delivered treats and gifts to all the hilltop children, and in later years established a mid-morning coffee break for the groups of hunters he hosted, which continues to be observed annually in his honor.
Glenn II, also called Bud, caught Maple Fever in 2001 during an FFA tour of nearby Wending Creek and Brydonson Farms, both of which are members of the Potter/Tioga Maple Producers Association, and being spurred along by the encouragement of his family.
As part of an agriculture project in 2002, Bud installed 200 taps, using a wood-fired evaporator in the farm’s old milk house to make the first batch of his own Maple Syrup.
He continued tapping trees and harvesting sap as a member of the Spud Growers FFA, expanding his operation each year, and was named Agri-Businessman of the Year for both Pennsylvania and the Eastern States Region in 2006.
In 2007, it was time to expand; Glenn II leased an old machine storage barn on the family farm.
After completing renovations, the new Sons of Dunn Sugar House was unveiled. The large building houses a fuel oil-fired evaporator with steam-away and automatic draw-off, a gas-fired finishing pan, filter presses, canners and bottlers, and a modern Maple Kitchen.
Currently, the Dunn’s, with the help of their family and friends, maintain 2500 taps, with 1600 of those connected by a tube and vacuum system. Through this process, they teach their grandchildren, poised to become the fifth generation of maple producers, the business of creating high-quality maple products.
Sons of Dunn Farm’s maple operations have expanded each year. Throughout 2013, an additional 1500 taps will be connected by vacuum systems in the sugar bush, and a reverse osmosis machine is planned for installation in the sugar house.
The Dunn’s are members of both the Potter/Tioga Maple Producers Association and the Pennsylvania Maple Producers Association. Their maple products have been marketed in 16 states and two foreign countries, and can be found at the Potter County Fair, PA Farm Show, the Potter/Tioga Maple Festival and Maple Weekend Tours, and events throughout the region.
The family remains very community-oriented. Glenn Sr. serves as Assistant Chief of the Coudersport Volunteer Fire Department, and Glenn II serves as the department’s Rescue Captain and Secretary, and is employed with the Potter County Conservation District.
“If the ‘steam’s a rising,’ stop by and visit” at the Sons of Dunn Family Farm, located at 1606 North Ayers Hill Road, Coudersport, where the Dunn Family’s award-winning Maple Products can be purchased year-round. Special treats are prepared for Maple Weekend, including Maple lollipops, hard candy and shortbread cookies. Syrup samples, boiling and equipment demonstrations are offered.
To reach the farm, travel two miles on Route 872 south from the intersection with US-6. Turn left onto Ayers Hill Road. After driving approximately one mile, the Sons of Dunn Sugar House will be on the left.
To place an order or to obtain additional information, contact the farm at 814-274-7247 or by emailing sodfamilyfarm@hotmail.com .
Photographs of the farm and this year’s operation and information on current events are available on the Sons of Dunn Family Farm Facebook page.
