Dr. H. E. Cromwell
Well Known Dentist of Port Allegany Dies Suddenly.
The death of Dr. Howard E. Cromwell, for many years one of Port Allegany's most prominent citizens occurred Sunday morning at 5:45 o'clock at his home on North Main Street, following a heart attack. Though he had not been in the best of health recently, he had been about as usual, and his death was entirely unexpected to his family and numerous friends.
Dr. Cromwell was born at Somerset, Pa., November 21, 1876. At the time of the Spanish American War, he enlisted in the United States Army May 9, 1898, and served as corporal in Company D, 10th Pennsylvania Volunteers until August 22, 1898, under the elder General MacArthur, father of the present general. Among the soldiers serving with him was our present United States Senator and former governor, Edward Martin.
Folowing his honorable discharge from the army, he entered the University of Pittsburgh, where he was graduated from the dental college in 1903. He opened a dental office in Ridgway in 1907, going to Roulette in 1909, and moving his office to Port Allegany in 1912.
Active in Masonic circles, he was a past master of Liberty Lodge, F. & A. M., past high priest of Arnold Chapter, and past commander of the Potter Commandery at Coudersport. He was also a member of Coudersport Consistory.
He is survived by
- one sister, Miss Bertha Cromwell of Port Allegany;
- one daughter, Mrs. Robert Fessenden of Bradford;
two step-sons,
- Willard and
- Frank Miller of California;
and several grandchildren.
His wife preceded him in death in 1922.
Funeral service was held Wednesday afternoon at 2:00 o'clock at the Methodist Church, Rev. William Swales officiating. The Masonic organizations of the borough attended in a body, and had charge of the committal services at the Fairview Cemetery. A number of Coudersport friends attended the ceremony.
