Jacob Brookover maternal grandfather (of Eli and John) and George Wetzel grandfather (of Eli, John and George W.) both served in the war of 1812.
Eli enrolled Aug. 8, 1862 Middlebourne W.Va., in Co. E., 14th W.Va. V. I., 2d Brig., 2d Div., 8th A.C. At an engagement at Carter`s Farm Eli was struck by shell and badly stunned. Stricken by intermittent fever in 1863, was cared for in hospitals at New Creek, Claryville, Cumberland and Parkersburg for two and a half months. Returning from a twenty days furlough he was detailed as guard to ammunition train for five days. He took active part in battles of New River Bridge, Oppequan, Harpers Ferry, Winchester, Bunker Hill, Cedar Creek, Berryvile, Lynchburg, Piedmont and others, receiving an honorable discharge July 1,1865, at Cumberland, Md. Eli`s wife`s brothers, Aaron Roberts and William Roberts also served their country. William was wounded and died since the close of the war. Comrade Wetzel was a member of Wm. Powell Post, No. 17, serving as Q.M., kept in touch with the soldiers. He`s engaged in farming near Kidwell, W.Va.
